Former Disney protégée Demi Lovato has had a tumultuous time over the past couple of years. First, the Sonny With a Chance actress headed to rehab for various drug and cutting issues related in some ways to maintaining a too-slim figure. After officially quitting her hit Disney show six months after completing rehab, Lovato has maintained a fairly low media profile even after the release of her third full-length album, Unbroken in September of 2011. Recently, the star spoke out about her past troubles and where she is now.
Lovato, 19, spent three months in late 2010 in rehab working on some troublesome body issues. What followed was a time period where the only thing fans heard about the pop star was a rumored weight gain. There was a lot of waiting and wondering whether Lovato would return to what she did best, but after Unbroken was released and did fairly well, the young star seems back on track.
"I'm not saying I'm perfect, or fixed, but I am learning to love and accept myself. My outlook is more positive and I am happy.”
That seems a long way from the Demi of yesteryear, who had major troubles with bulimia and who reportedly was caught drinking and possibly even doing cocaine. Although Lovato does not come right out and admit the harrowing drug use, she did tell Fabulous drugs were an issue for.
"It's something I don't really want to talk about. What I can say is that I was depressed. I would come off stage in front of 18,000 people and suddenly be alone in a hotel room. I'd come crashing down and would try to find a way to recreate that feeling, to stay 'up.’”
It’s good to hear the “Skyscraper” singer is well beyond the days of trouble. With a fourth album reportedly in the works, Lovato is well on her way to simply being fine again. That’s more than we can say about certain other Disney golden girls.
