A week after attending a birthday party for the President of Chechnya, Hilary Swank has issued a statement admitting her decision to appear likely wasn’t the smartest choice she ever made. The festivities for President Ramzan Kadyrov were held in Chechnya on October 5th and featured several other celebrities including Seal and Jean-Claude Van Damme. All are rumored to have been paid handsomely for their attendance, but Swank is the only one who has expressed regret about her actions.

Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov has a very complicated reputation. The son of assassinated former President Akhmad Kadyrov, he was a powerful militia leader during the Second Chechen War and was appointed Deputy Prime Minister before his thirtieth birthday. Within a few years, he was President of Chechnya and is widely credited with restoring order to the region. Unfortunately, many human rights groups have also accused him of ruling on intimidation and using force to rid the country of his political opponents. Those same human rights groups were the ones who threw their hands up over Swank’s appearance, and they’re now calling for the actress to donate the money she received to charity.

According to The Telegraph, she’s given no indication that she will return the money or donate it to a non-profit. The moral of this story is if you’re going to collect a fee for attending someone’s birthday party, do some research ahead of time to see whether you’re comfortable with the decision. Now that Swank has admitted, had she known, she wouldn’t have attended the party, it’s a shame on her and she probably should give the money back.
