America’s sweetheart Jennifer Aniston has just gotten her first tattoo. Emblazoned in cursive letters on the inside of her right foot, it reads “Norman”. This moniker might not mean a lot to casual fans of the Office Space star, but to the obsessives, its back story should be instantly clear. Norman was Aniston’s prized Welsh corgi-terrier, and he passed away last month at the age of fifteen. He was with her before Brad Pitt and he stayed with her through the divorce because he’s a dog, and that’s what dogs do.

Some of you are probably rolling your eyes right now. You probably think it’s stupid to get a dog’s name tattooed on your foot, but it’s a hell of a lot more common than you might think. I worked at a veterinary hospital for a few years and can attest to the fact that a lot of grieving pet owners get a tattoo commemorating a favorite dog. I even knew one twenty-something girl who remembered her beloved bulldog Groucho by getting his face tattooed on her stomach. I can’t say I support that aforementioned six inch by six inch artist rendering, but I absolutely can get behind Aniston’s new artwork.

Dogs are awesome. With an unwavering loyalty and a pleasant demeanor, they love you the same in the good times and the bad. It’s okay to reward that type of loyalty, provided it’s with something small and not creepy. According to People, Aniston’s rep has confirmed that tattoo’s origin, but the actress herself still hasn’t spoken publically on the matter. No word yet on whether she informed Brad Pitt of the animal’s passing, but since he seems like a good dude, something tells me he’s heartbroken by the loss too.
