There’s nothing quite like the local news. Send reporters out into a local community, and you have no idea what type of people they’ll meet. Most of the time, these strangers wind up being average enough, but now and again, they come across someone or something truly special, like, for example, a random guy and his beloved Hulk statue.
As you can see in the above video, the nice people on WGN Morning News in Chicago were looking at a live feed from the South Side of some flooding when they noticed one of the backyards contained a large statue of the Incredible Hulk. Almost on cue, the homeowner noticed the helicopter and ran outside to pose next to the giant green character. It was a great live TV moment, and it was one the news anchors ate up and took in stride, screaming “South Side” and making jokes about the Hulk fighting off the flood water.
With cable stations suspending anchors for even the most minor of offenses, large amounts of money being spent on pre-production to ensure stability and expectation levels of on-air professionalism rising too, live TV broadcasts designed for a local community are fast becoming the only way to see live greatness like this. And that’s a shame. To paraphrase Chevy Chase, TV is just a lot more interesting when there’s a good chance someone is going to screw up.
There’s no word on where the man might have gotten his Hulk statue, but the next time Mark Ruffalo is in Chicago, I sincerely hope he takes a detour and gives this dude an autograph. It seems like he’s earned it.
