The Church of Scientology isn’t the only one calling BS on Vanity Fair’s recent article about the organization’s secretive search to find Tom Cruise a girlfriend following his break-up with Penelope Cruz. Bert Fields, the actor’s longtime legal representative, completely denied the story in its entirety yesterday, casting one more piece of doubt on an accusation that’s already polarizing readers.
Correspondent Maureen Orth’s story went something like this: Shelly Miscaviage, the wife of the Church leader, decided to find Cruise a new girlfriend. To do so, she auditioned numerous actresses within the organization before eventually settling on Nazanin Boniadi. She was audited and flown to New York City to go ice skating with Cruise. Within weeks, they moved in together, but the relationship wound up failing. After Boniadi told a friend about what happened, she was punished and made to scrub toilets for violating confidentiality agreements she signed.
It’s not altogether shocking that story would race around the Internet, but if you take it from Fields, not only is it not true, it’s an old allegation.
”Vanity Fair’s story is essentially a rehash of tired old lies previously run in the supermarket tabloids, quoting the same bogus ‘sources’.”
The lawyer later summed up the article to BBC with the words “long”, “boring” and “false”. Of course, Boniadi and Orth would have you believe otherwise, but that’s to be expected with a story about the Church of Scientology. I’m not sure the organization has ever done one thing both it and its critics have agreed upon or viewed in the same light.
