In two years, Bon Iver has had a hell of a career shift. When his debut record For Emma, Forever Ago was released back in early 2008, the Wisconsin native’s career radically changed into the glorious indie act he is now known as. It seems like the new found celebrity status hasn't gotten to his head either, as his appearance on The Colbert Report would imply, the man is as soft spoken and down to earth as any folk star could be. It makes sense too, the sensitive singer-songwriter wrote his entire debut album in three months in a desolate cabin while experiencing massive depression following a break-up with his previous group DeYarmond Edison. Tying his music deeply in the roots of his Wisconsin home, the artist takes nothing for granted. That is why I am proud to announce that the entire state of Wisconsin has elected today, July 22nd, “Bon Iver Day” in honor of the noble artist who touched everyone of in his and other communities across the state.

According to Milwaukee Journal Sentential , Tom Barrett who is Milwaukee’s mayor, announced his decision to make today “Bon Iver Day,” explaining: “Justin Vernon/Bon Iver’s Wisconsin and Milwaukee ties” and because of the release of his outstanding sophomore effort, and the starting the beginning of his world tour at Milwaukee’s Riverside Theater on Friday Night.

In a full statement from Barrett, he explains the reason for such a welcoming dedication:

The City of Milwaukee joins community members and supporting fans on the occasion of Bon Iver’s international tour kicking off at the Riverside Theater on Friday, July 22, 2011; and, WHEREAS, Bon Iver was founded in 2007 by Justin Vernon in his hometown of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where he continues to record music in a new state-of-the-art recording studio; and, WHEREAS, Bon Iver’s music embraces Justin Vernon’s Wisconsin heritage, as he has become an international ambassador for both Milwaukee and Wisconsin, while they travel across the world playing music and interact with national media; and, WHEREAS, Bon Iver’s self-titled album debuted at number two on the Billboard charts in June 2011, and has gained attention from The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, SPIN Magazine, “Late Night with David Letterman”, “The Colbert Report” and “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”; and, WHEREAS, The City of Milwaukee joins supporting fans to enjoy the entertaining performance of Bon Iver and commends the band for their musical accomplishments; NOW, THEREFORE, I, TOM BARRETT, Mayor of the City of Milwaukee, do hereby proclaim Friday, July 22, 2011, to be BON IVER DAY throughout the City of Milwaukee.

Even though Iver will not be attending any dates in Florida, I will surely watch out for any future stops in the sunshine state. For those that don’t know who Bon Iver is, watch the music video for his dramatic but aesthetically beautiful song “Calgary”:
