Women Are Going Wild Over This Handsome Gorilla At Japanese Zoo

The phrase ‘going ape shit’ has never been quite so fitting. A gorilla named Shabani has become a hunky heartthrob among women, attracting a very large following of admirers. Japanese women are flocking to Higashiyama Zoo to take a look at what they are calling the most ‘handsome’ and ‘good-looking’ gorilla ever. Meet Shabani:

According to Daily Mail, Shabani grew up at Syndey’s Taronga Zoo and now lives in the Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Nagoya. The gorilla was moved to Japan to mate with three female gorillas, but it looks like he is attracting the attention of even more females in the process. Shabani’s quick rise to fame has been largely fueled by Twitter where adoring fans often refer to him as ‘ikemen’ which means a ‘good-looking man’ in Japanese. The zoo has seen a skyrocket in attendance, as women flock to see ‘ikemen’. Allan Schmidt, a zookeeper at the Australian zoo Shabani was moved from spoke out about his popularity chalking it up to the Japanese loving fads. But he did agree that Shabai was a good-looking gorilla.

Schmidt also noted that Shabani is no stranger to the limelight. After moving to Nagoya in 2007 he was pictured walking across a tightrope in his enclosure, and it became a viral photo. There are an abundance of photos on the web of Shabani now, but most of them capture him in more regal positions, posing and staring right into the camera.

There’s no doubt this gorilla is a good looking animal. And if we’ve learned anything since the YouTube surge, it’s that people love animals doing weirdly human things. Shabani clearly loves the attention he’s getting, and continues to flex his muscles and give the camera what it wants. But we’re left wondering, is Shabani a little too aware? Are we on the verge of a Rise of the Planet of the Apes scenario?

At least Shabani’s celebrity status has come all through admiration, but as the zoo possibly gets overrun by excitable women, it may serve as the perfect distraction for the other animals to make their escape.
