Every novel I’ve ever read has led me to believe monsters don’t watch television. There’s just no room in the daily schedule. People need to be terrorized, pies need to be stolen off window sills. The whole thing gets to be a busy chore, but perhaps around the holidays, the little monsters can put aside running amuck for a few hours to watch Lady Gaga. At least that’s what ABC is banking on.

Working well ahead of deadline, the network has officially announced its tapped pop star Lady Gaga to usher in 2012. This year’s event happens to be the 40th anniversary of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, and while it’s unlikely the legend would have guessed he’d be celebrating four decades with a woman who once wore a Kermit The Frog dress, the former American Bandstand host made his career out of evolving with the times. Lady Gaga is the muse of the moment; so, in a way, she’s the only possible choice to ring in the occasion.

According to The Associated Press, American Idol host Ryan Seacrest will once again manage most of the East Coast hosting duties, while Fergie will chime in from Los Angeles. With so many people going out, it seems counterintuitive to plan such a star-studded television event, but if New Year’s Eve parties have taught me one thing, it’s that hosts always turn on the TV in the background.

I’ll be watching Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve on December 31st. Will you? Is the promise of Lady Gaga enough for you to put down the champagne long enough to check out the television? Let us know by voting in the poll below…
