Earlier this week, Taylor Swift harshly criticized Amy Poehler and Tina Fey for saying she needed to be single and take some time to learn about herself during a joke at the Golden Globes. The pop star channeled Madeline Albright and said there’s a special place in hell for women like the former Saturday Night Live comediennes who refuse to help other women.

Not surprisingly, Fey and Poehler were caught pretty off-guard by her anger, and while both expressed disappointment that she was upset, neither retrospectively questioned the validity of the joke. In fact, Poehler even quipped that she would end up in hell but more for tax reasons and less for making fun of Swift.

On the one hand, it’s easy to see why Swift is annoyed. Having every one of her relationships during her high school and college years constantly referenced by comedians and tabloids must feel unfair and frustrating. She probably thinks she gets it enough from men and shouldn’t have to hear about it from women. On the other hand, it’s hard to fault Poehler and Fey for making a joke that went over extremely well with the audience. Their job at the Globes was to make people laugh. They did that in spades, and in the grand scheme of jokes about Swift’s love life, that was far from the most aggressive any of us have ever heard.
