A genetic anomaly allows a teenager from an abusive household to teleport from one place to another. A teenager from an abusive household discovers he can teleport from one place to another. He uses this ability to search for the man he believes is responsible for the death of his mother, drawing the attention of the NSA, and another kid with the same power. He discovers this gift has existed for centuries and finds himself in a war that has been raging for thousands of years between "Jumpers" and those who have sworn to kill them.
The plot synopsis makes it sound like a bigger budget version of The Butterfly Effect, but what it actually looks like is a fresh, flat out cool take on the type secret war world presented in The Matrix. Samuel L. Jackson is the new Laurence Fishburne.
It’s the trailers that hooked me. I love the sense of forward motion you get when Hayden goes into one of his jumping effects. I love his wanton misuse of his powers to do such mundane things as move from the couch to his fridge. It’s an idea with a lot of potential, and with Bourne Identity helmer Doug Liman running this it could work. Could this be the next big franchise he’s launching here? Entertaining, early year diversion might be a more reasonable expectation.
Hayden Christensen could certainly use a hit, he’s on the verge of following in the vanished footsteps of Mark Hamill. Maybe Jumper will be the movie to save him from behind the scenes voice work on Saturday morning cartoons.
