Tom McCarthy, acclaimed writer/ director of The Visitor and The Station Agent, explores the allegiances and bonds between unlikely characters with a lighter touch in his new film. Struggling attorney Mike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti), who volunteers as a high school wrestling coach, secretly takes on the guardianship of an elderly client in an attempt to help keep his practice and his family afloat. When the client’s teenage grandson runs away from home and shows up on his grandfather’s doorstep, Mike’s life is turned upside down. A win-win arrangement turns into something much more complicated than he ever bargained for. McCarthy’s deft touch balancing drama and comedy, broken hearts and poignant humanity is at play in Win Win.

This list started as an unfilled Word document saying “Best Movies” on January 1st , and it ended with over one hundred films that have been obsessively tweaked. There’s no ulterior motives and no efforts to impress behind the choices I’ve made. These are just the ones I liked a little bit more than the rest.
In celebration of Win Win’s arrival on home video, and in front of quite a few new eyeballs, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has sent along an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from Win Win. In the clip, writer/director Tom McCarthy and Joe Tiboni, who shares a “Story By” credit, discuss the origins and appeal of the film.

Exclusive Clip: Tom McCarthy And Joe Tiboni Discuss Win Win
I’m a sucker for Eminem references and Melanie Lynskey, which both appear in Win Win so I’ve done my best to promote the film. The only other card I have up my sleeve is its DVD and Blu-Ray release date and special features list, courtesy of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Win Win streets on August 30.

I talked to McCarthy about his decision to tell a sports story when the genre has been done to death, about revisiting wrestling, the sport he himself played in high school, and about making his movies about the fundamentally decent people he believes are everywhere

Interview: Tom McCarthy Embraces Sports, Comedy, And Suburbia For Win Win
It sounds a little too treacly and a little too much like The Blind Side, but then again, the notion of a movie about a white college professor whose life is changed by a Muslim street musician was pretty awful too, but The Visitor was outstanding
While it seems Giamatti will still have a role in the film, the lead character will be a scrawny high school wrestler inspired by McCarthy's own childhood-- and the director is going to New Jersey wrestling matches to try to find the perfect kid

Tom McCarthy Scouting New Jersey Wrestlers For His Next Film
Giamatti has a way of shining in pretty much anything he does, and McCarthy has a way of getting great performances out of actors in tiny movies, so there's really no reason not to root for this to happen
