It’s time to celebrate the Christmas/ Chanukah/ Kwanza/ Festivus Holiday season, so here at Cinema Blend we’re enjoying Twelve Days of Christmas. Yes, we know traditionally the “12 days” start with Christmas, but we plan on being celebrated out by that time, so we’re pushing the twelve days leading up to the holiday.

Here in Blend Tech, we’re celebrating with a geeky wish list. Sadly, these are gifts we’d love to have, but will only be able to wish about since they aren’t likely to exist anytime soon. That’s the joy of science-fiction and fantasy, imagining the future, it’s just a shame this stuff isn’t real yet.

On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Computers have evolved at a surprising speed. It seems every year they get faster and able to do more. It probably only is a matter of time before someone does create a solid enough A.I. that they’ll do everything we want. But when will they know everything we need them to know about everything in the Galaxy, and be able to deliver it all with a comforting British voice?

Unfortunately right now computers aren’t programmed with the best places to Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster, nor do they come inscribed with the comforting words “Don’t Panic” on them without customization by the owners. How is this niche not being filled by some money grubbing corporation out there?

To be honest, I haven’t even seen a convincing computer theme for the Hitchhiker’s Guide, mostly because nobody has managed to get Stephen Fry living inside the computer to vocalize whatever it is I’m looking up on Google or Wikipedia. Until someone can develop that in a highly portable (and slightly cheaper) version, I’ll remain disappointed that there’s no Hitchhiker’s Guide for me.
