It’s time to celebrate the Christmas/ Chanukah/ Kwanza/ Festivus Holiday season, so here at Cinema Blend we’re enjoying Twelve Days of Christmas. Yes, we know traditionally the “12 days” start with Christmas, but we plan on being celebrated out by that time, so we’re pushing the twelve days leading up to the holiday.

Here in Blend Tech, we’re celebrating with a geeky wish list. Sadly, these are gifts we’d love to have, but will only be able to wish about since they aren’t likely to exist anytime soon. That’s the joy of science-fiction and fantasy, imagining the future, it’s just a shame this stuff isn’t real yet.

On the fifth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…

The ability to understand all languages

I took three years of Spanish in high school and two more in college. Do you know how much Spanish I speak now? Almost none. I can barely even remember how to conjugate verbs, let alone remember what the verbs were. I know it’s much easier to learn a language if you immerse yourself in it, which isn’t exactly what a high school classroom is like, but still, there’s got to be an easier way.

Enter Star Trek and the universal translator. Thanks to their handy little device (built into all ships, stations, communicators, etc), there’s no need to study foreign languages. All you have to do is rely on technology and everything is golden. Klingon? No problem. Spanish? Easy cheesy. Darmok? Well, maybe some languages don’t quite make the transition, but still, it’s better than sitting in Spanish class for four years.

This is the chance Apple, Sprint, Verizon, or any other cell phone manufacturer/provider has been waiting for. Step up and find a way to add the universal translator to your cell phone and you’ve got an instant customer of anyone who had to sit through many painful adolescent years studying languages they could care less about.
