Drop Dead Diva Renewed For Season 6

There was a point in time when it was looking like Drop Dead Diva’s fate was sealed. In fact, Lifetime cancelled the series after its fourth season, leaving viewers hanging after a potentially major twist was thrown in during the Season 4 closer. But things got worked out and the drama returned for Season 5, which began airing back in June and recently returned for its second half earlier this month. And now it looks as though Lifetime has been gracious enough to hit the “return” button on this show once again, as the series has been renewed for a sixth season, which is slated to air next year.

Variety reported the good news today, stating that Lifetime has ordered 13 new episodes of the series, and plans to get Season 6 on the air next year. Thirteen episodes is the same number of episodes all of the previous seasons of the series have gotten, though Season 5 was the first season to be split, with the first eight episodes airing over the summer of this year, and the remaining five rolling out over the course of October, with two more set to air (October 27, November 3).

Drop Dead Diva stars Brooke Elliott as Jane Bingum, who’s also Deb Dobkins. The series begins with a beautiful aspiring model getting into a car accident and dying. She manages to hit the “return” button on her life, sending herself down from heaven and into the body of Jane, an overweight attorney with a brilliant mind and a strong work ethic. As coincidence would have it, Jane just so happens to work at the same law firm where Deb’s boyfriend Grayson Kent (Jackson Hurst) practices. Of course, Grayson believes his girlfriend is dead, and doesn’t know that she’s been reincarnated into the body of Jane. Suffice to say, Jane’s relationship with Grayson is complicated from there, but that’s part of the story, which has gone on for five seasons. Whether or not Jane and Grayson will get together is one of the bigger plots in the series, which also has its Legally Blonde moments, as Deb uses Jane’s brains to practice law, but her own sense of compassion and fashion to guide her instincts.

Last January, we learned that Lifetime cancelled the series, but things got worked out and as we mentioned, the show returned in June. The series currently airs Sunday nights at 9:00 p.m. ET on Lifetime. Catch the first four seasons of the series on Netflix.
