One of things I love about a cappella music is the way it can make an overplayed pop song seem brand new again. The above preview for the new season of The Sing-Off is a prime example of that, as it shows competing group Street Corner Renaissance singing One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful.” To hear these guys sing the pop song, it’s as if the tune's been around for decades. The a cappella spin on One Direction’s hit demonstrates the timelessness of the song, as well as the talent set to be featured in the fourth season of NBC’s seasonal a cappella singing competition.
The Sing-Off features a cappella groups from around the country as they compete against one another for a recording contract and a cash prize. The voices-only twist is the main thing that sets this series apart from other singing competitions, as well as the fact that the series only runs for a couple of weeks during the holidays. So there’s no drawn-out audition process, just pure talent of varying degrees. As the above preview demonstrates, the age range of the contestants is also a bit wider than what you might find in a season of American Idol.

Nick Lachey hosts the series, and at the judges table, we have returners Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman, who are joined by fellow 90s artist Jewel. Based on this photo, it looks like Stockman and Folds are happy to see one another…
It’ll be interesting to see how Jewel fits in with these two guys.
