Helix Video Shows The First 15 Minutes Of Syfy's Chilling New Thriller

Ahead of its Friday premiere, Syfy is giving viewers an early look at their new drama Helix, a sci-fi thriller about a potential virus outbreak. The above video gives us the first fifteen minutes or so of the first episode, beginning with a bit of horror and then easing back to introduce us to the team of scientists tasked with investigating the outbreak situation at Arctic Biosystems, an Arctic-set research facility.

When I shared my review of the first few hours of this exciting new series, I talked a bit about the character drama and how the relationships between some of the characters really serve to drive the story forward. I think the first fifteen minutes of the episode really demonstrate that well, as we get a small sample of what’s going on with these characters leading up to this situation. Farragut, his ex-wife and his brother might not have spent much time together since the whole falling out, but given the circumstances, Alan and Julia seem willing to put the bad blood aside to focus on what’s going on with Peter at this facility.

Another thing we get to see a little bit of is the mysterious side of Dr. Hiroshi Hatake (Hiroyuki Sanada), the guy running the facility. The weirdest part about him, from what we’re shown in the above clip, is the way he reacted to Peter’s condition at the very beginning of the episode, calling it “progress” and then encouraging him to drink some water, which made his throat spasm. It seemed like he knew that was going to happen. So is this all one big experiment? What is this guy up to? These are questions we’ll have to wait to find out, but having seen the series premiere, which is actually two back-to-back episodes spanning two days during this ordeal, and the hour that follows (Day 3), I’ll say that the suspense and mystery only builds from there. So if you like what you saw in the above clip, be sure to keep watching!

Here’s one of the creepy teasers Syfy released previously for Helix:

And this video, which just went up a few days ago, helps us get to know the scientists working at Arctic Biosystems…

Helix premieres Friday, January 10 at 10:00 p.m. ET on Syfy.
