Doctor Who Is Heading To The Big Screen Again, Get The Details

The wait for Doctor Who Series 9 (or as U.S. viewers call it, Season 9), is nearly over, which means now is the best time to catch up on eponymous Time Lord’s adventures from last year. Season 8 is already available to buy both digitally and on home media, and will also be one of Netflix’s new additions next month. However, if you’re living in the US and are looking to watch the last two episodes in style, you’ll get the opportunity to do so when they are screened in hundreds of movie theaters this fall.

BBC Worldwide North America and Fathom Events have announced a special screening of the Doctor Who Season 8 two-part finale “Dark Water” and “Death in Heaven” on September 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m (local time). Both episodes will be screened in Real3D in 700 theaters across the United States, but if seeing The Doctor fight Missy and the Cybermen on the big screen doesn’t sound exciting enough for you, there’s more. Accompanying these episodes is a prequel scene for the Season 9 premiere titled “The Doctor’s Meditation,” as well as an interview with Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman hosted by Star Trek: The Next Generation star Will Wheaton. Previous Doctor Who episodes that have been screened in theaters include the 50th anniversary special “The Day of the Doctor” and the Season 8 premiere “Deep Breath.”

While the Twelfth Doctor was dealing with crazy shenanigans across time and space(a.k.a. his normal routine), there were several cameos from the mysterious Missy throughout Season 8 in a world called The Nethersphere, which was some kind of afterlife for the dead. “Dark Water” finally had The Doctor coming face to face with the insane villainess, who was revealed to be the latest incarnation of his arch-nemesis The Master. We won’t spoil what Missy’s sinister plan was for those who haven’t seen these episodes yet, but it did involve The Doctor’s old robotic foes the Cybermen. Recurring characters Kate Stewart (UNIT’s Chief Scientific Officer) and Osgood (Kate’s assistant) also guest-starred during “Death in Heaven,” and there was even a fun nod to an important character from the classic Doctor Who series. The finale was followed by the 2014 Christmas special “Last Christmas,” which set the stage for The Doctor and Clara’s adventures in Season 9.

Tickets will be available for purchase starting July 31, and you can visit FathomEvents.com to buy tickets there or look for participating theaters. In addition, Doctor Who Season 9 will debut Saturday, September 19 on BBC America in the United States and BBC One in the United Kingdom.
