ABC’s Dirty Dancing remake is shaping up nicely. They found their Baby months ago, and have cast her devoted housewife mother. Now, they’ve finally found someone to fill the shoes of what might be the most important piece of the Dirty Dancing puzzle. Ladies and gentlemen, we now have our Johnny.
Actor, singer and dancer Colt Prattes is set to play Johnny Castle in the TV remake of Dirty Dancing, ABC confirmed to CinemaBlend today. The role was, of course, immortalized by Patrick Swayze in the 1987 film of the same name. Prattes has appeared in the stage show Rock of Ages in Las Vegas as rock superstar Stacee Jaxx. But, he is best known for dancing with pop singer P!nk during her The Truth About Love Tour and on stage at the 2014 Grammy Awards and American Music Awards, after making a breathtaking debut with her in the video for her song “Try.”
If you are one of the few people who don’t remember the plot to Dirty Dancing, don’t worry, here’s a refresher for you. In the summer of 1963, Frances “Baby” Houseman and her well-to-do family are vacationing at a resort in the Catskill Mountains. Her simple vacation takes a turn, however, when she gets to know the working class staff at the resort. She develops a crush on Johnny, the resort’s dance instructor, and after helping his dance partner out of a jam, is convinced to dance with him at one of their weekly performances at another local resort.
Baby and Johnny practice their toned asses off and become attracted to each other, which later develops into a real relationship. After a series of soapy twists and turns, Baby and Johnny find themselves performing at the end of season talent show and helping all of the movie’s loose ends get tied up during a joyful dance number.
To say that Dirty Dancing has become a phenomenon doesn’t quite cover the impact the film has had on pop culture in the decades since its release. It opened to mostly positive reviews, and still has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 72 percent, and was one of the highest grossing movies of 1987, making $170 million worldwide. But, the thing that’s lasted is the love of the audience over time. By 2005 the film was selling around a million DVDs a year, and by 2007 it had sold a total of 10 million copies. The romantic drama is still one of the best loved movies of the 1980s.
Colt Prattes’ Johnny will be joining Abigail Breslin’s Baby and Debra Messing’s Mrs. Houseman in the production, which will be a three hour special on ABC. If his work with P!nk is any indication, Prattes’ fine physique and unbelievable dancing talent will take him a long way in the role.
