A Cheers Or Frasier Reboot? Here's What Kelsey Grammer Says

kelsey grammer frasier

TV nowadays is in an era of reboots, reunions, and revivals of all kinds, and folks who have been in withdrawal from their favorite cancelled shows often have the hope of perhaps seeing favorite characters back on the small screen once more. Kelsey Grammer was a fixture on the sitcom scene in the 1980s and 1990s thanks to his roles on Cheers and its subsequent spinoff Frasier. In fact, Grammer played the role of Dr. Frasier Crane for nearly two decades. When asked whether he'd be interesting in resuming the role for a reboot, he had this to say:

No, I'm very happy with what I'm doing now. I look back at the past as a very fond place and I'd like to keep it that way.

There you have it, Cheers and Frasier fans. Kelsey Grammer evidently has great memories of his times on the two shows that made him famous, but he's not looking to try and rekindle the magic for a reboot or revival. He revealed his thoughts on the possibility of returning to the role during a chat with Fox News, and many fans everywhere will undoubtedly be dismayed by his preference to leave Frasier in the past rather than reprise the character for the present. Following his gig on Starz's Boss, Grammer has been doing a lot of voice work for productions like Storks and Trollhunters, and if that makes him happy, good for him.

At least fans don't have to worry about a reboot possibly ruining the original finales of either Cheers or Frasier. Both came to conclusive endings without any major cliffhangers, so we don't even need another set of episodes to answer any lingering questions. Sure, it might be fun to see older versions of the Cheers crowd or the Crane family back together again, but it also might be disappointing to those who loved the originals. For every smash hit revival like Doctor Who, there's a relative ratings flop like Heroes Reborn. Then, there are reboots like The X-Files that brought the characters back but totally changed up the dynamic from the last time we saw them, and even the most loyal Gilmore Girls viewers were divided on the new Netflix episodes. Maybe it's not horrible that Kelsey Grammer would rather let the shows' finales stand.

Of course, it is possible that a Cheers reunion could happen without Kelsey Grammer. Cheers was much more of an ensemble series than Frasier, and a reboot could work without Grammer. Kirstie Alley, at least, is on board to revisit her Cheers role once more. It's not out of the realm of possibility that the Cheers crew could get together and just say that Frasier couldn't make it for whatever reason.

Even if Cheers and Frasier never get any new episodes, there are plenty of old projects coming back to the small screen in the near future.
