A report from Variety confirms that Greg Berlanti recently sold a brand new drama to ABC. Titled Deception, the potential series centers on a disgraced magician who uses his skills as an illusionist to help the FBI solve its most difficult mysteries. It's a solid pitch that definitely seems to share quite a bit of DNA with series like The Mentalist and Limitless, and considering Berlanti's recent hot streak on the small screen, I think it's safe to say that we're definitely on board with Deception's core premise.
Of course, if there's any cause for concern regarding Deception's fundamental pitch, it could be the fact that we've arguably seen shows like this before. Although we don't know too much about the project yet, it's hard to argue against the fact that it seems to align very closely with the typical crime procedural formula that traditional broadcast networks have perfected so well over the years. That said, Greg Berlanti is known for taking risks with his small screen dramas, so we remain cautiously optimistic that Deception will break the mold in a way that feels fresh and exciting for ABC.
