Cable network TLC has launched a handful of hit series over the years, establishing itself as a place to be in the genre of reality TV in particular. Now, the network is working to bring one of its most significant series back to the small screen. TLC is reviving landmark home renovation show Trading Spaces.
TLC has not released details about what the Trading Spaces revival will look like, and we have no way of knowing at this point if original series host Paige Davis will be back on board for the relaunch. Per Variety, TLC announced the Trading Spaces revival at an upfront presentation that revealed a number of new developments for the network. The format of the series the first time around obviously worked for viewers; it should be interesting to see if and how TLC makes changes for the new version.
Trading Spaces was and remains today one of TLC's biggest programs. The show premiered in 2000 and ran for eight seasons, creating a TV market for home renovation shows. If not for Trading Spaces, we almost certainly never would have gotten projects like Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Flip or Flop, or Fixer Upper. By the end of its run in 2008, Trading Spaces would launch multiple spinoffs as well as the careers of some of its featured personalities.
Episodes of Trading Spaces featured two sets of neighbors who would each redesign a room in the other's house. Nobody had any input in the changes being made to their own houses, and it was always fun to see what the teams of designers came up with each week with a limited budget and only a matter of days. When the show began, teams were comprised of two people and given a budget of $1000. As time passed and the series grew in popularity, teams grew to three people and the budget was bumped up to $2000.
It wasn't always easy to tell if the homeowners would be happy with the changes to their houses. The teams could get pretty... well, ambitious in their designs, and reactions could be mixed.
