The X-Files Renewed For Season 11 At Fox

The X-Files returned to Fox back in 2016 after more than a decade off the air, and fans counted themselves lucky to have the biggest names from the original cast back together for another go. The tenth season was technically billed as an event series, so we couldn't say if we'd ever get any more after that finale. We've been waiting a while for news of what is or isn't coming next. Now, we can stop wanting to believe, because the truth is here, and we can start whistling that theme song all over again: Fox has renewed The X-Files for a Season 11.

Season 11 of The X-Files -- or the second chapter of the event series, if you prefer -- will run for ten full episodes, which is four more than we got back in 2016. Original series creator Chris Carter will be on more to executive produce yet again. More importantly, stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have both signed on to return to their iconic roles of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Production will begin this summer, with the season itself set to air in the 2017-2018 TV season.

The tenth season drew huge ratings for Fox as it brought old fans out of the woodwork and won new fans. The six episodes of 2016 touched on everything from the alien abductions to the monsters to the classic conflict of skeptic vs. believer that drove the original series for so many years. The renewal for Season 11 comes as especially great news for those of us who have been driving ourselves crazy wondering what would happen next after the insane cliffhanger in the Season 10 finale. We may not find out anytime too soon, but at least we now know that we will find out.

Given that we haven't heard much encouraging news lately, I was beginning to think that all we'd ever get of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson back together as Mulder and Scully was via audio book. There was plenty of public enthusiasm for more X-Files in the months after the tenth season ended, but buzz has died off recently. Confirmation of another batch of episodes is definitely reason to get excited. Interestingly, the 10-episode order follow's Duchovny's earlier statements that the 6-episode season was too short but a 22-episode season would be way too long.

If this poster is to be believed, and the truth is really out there, then what are the chances that the "truth" in this case is that more modern shows should use throwback fonts in marketing? Not as thrilling as aliens, true, but 1993 Fox Mulder would probably be into it.
