The Awesome Reason More Gilmore Girls Could Happen At Netflix

Lorelai and Luke in Stars Hollow

If you've been paying any attention to the world of TV and film production, you'll notice one trend that seems to be ruling the day: nostalgia. And with nostalgic properties proving extremely profitable over the past few years, just about any TV show seems like it could get a long awaited reboot or revival. This was definitely the case with Netflix's Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, which brought the cast and audience back to Stars Hollow for the first time in the decade since the show's sudden cancellation. Reception for the miniseries was mixed, although now it appears that there still may be a chance that more episodes could be produced over at the streaming service.

Because it turns out that Director/writer Amy Sherman-Palladino has a special loophole in her current contract with Amazon. While Sherman-Palladino is currently working with Netflix's competitor, she made sure to have an addendum to allow her to return to Gilmore Girls if the opportunity presents itself. She elaborated to Radio Times, saying:

We carved out a little niche for ourselves with Amazon saying that if we ever want to do it, if the girls and us get together and we have a concept that works, then we have the freedom to do it. So it would just have to be the right circumstances, and that we're all sort of in the same drunken mood together to go repaint Stars Hollow again. Because we had to repaint Stars Hollow, and we'll have to repaint it again. But it's definitely possible.

Rejoice, Gilmore fans! Because it doesn't look like the fast talking and caffeine infused world of Gilmore Girls isn't dead just yet. Although it's clear that a new season of A Year in the Life probably isn't happening in the next year or two.

While Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life was one of the biggest pop culture moments of 2016, fans waited in vein for a renewal announcement. Unfortunately none came, and the cast and crew scattered to various other projects. Amy Sherman-Palladino has since inked a deal with Amazon, creating, producing, writing, and directing The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, starring House of Cards alum Rachel Brosnahan. This originally seemed to put a kabosh in the hopes of more Gilmore Girls episodes, but luckily Sherman-Palladio is keeping her options open.

That being said, we shouldn't expect Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life to return anytime soon, especially considering everyone's busy schedules. While Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband currently have their hands full at Amazon, series lead Alexis Bledel is a main character in Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale, which recently earned her an Emmy Award. Milo Ventimiglia is busy with This is Us, Jared Padalecki has Supernatural, Liza Weil is on How to Get Away With Murder, and Keiko Agena has a small role in 13 Reasons Why. With all these busy schedules, perhaps its better to wait a few years before returning to Stars Hollow.

Gilmore Girls and A Year in the Life are both streaming on Netflix, and Amy Sherman- Palladino's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will debut on Amazon March 17, 2017. In the meantime, check out our fall cancellation list to see which shows have already gotten the axe this year.
