Big Little Lies Completely Destroyed At The 2018 Golden Globes

The 2018 Golden Globe awards were about as empowering as primetime TV award ceremonies can be, with many acceptance speeches focused on inequality in Hollywood, as well championing those trying to champion change. Some of the biggest TV winners conveyed those affirmative motivations, too, with a clean sweep from HBO's female-fronted Big Little Lies, which won in every category it was nominated in. There is not a big or little untruth in declaring David E. Kelley's adaptation to be one of HBO's most critically acclaimed shows ever.

The "Limited Series, Miniseries or TV Movie" categories were split up all throughout the ceremony, which would have seemingly offered up some spread-out surprises if the scales wouldn't have been tipped so heavily in Big Little Lies' favor. The first award taken home by the hit not-so-limited-anymore series was for Best Actress, with Nicole Kidman taking home the trophy for her stellar work as the abused and maligned Celeste Wright. Co-star Reese Witherspoon was also nominated in the category, though Kidman won out, just as she did during the 2017 Emmy Awards, where both were also co-nominations.

Next up, we got to see actor Alexander Skarsgård winning the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series or TV Movie, with both supporting categories taking into account all scripted TV shows without distinguishing between long-run series and limited series. So the Hollywood Foreign Press Association obviously considered Skarsgård's performance as the morally repugnant Perry Wright to be the best in all of TV. And they weren't alone, since the True Blood vet also won the corresponding award during the Emmys.

It was a similar turn of events for Laura Dern, who also wowed audiences with her performance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. She got a lot of attention from TV viewers for her role as the initially antagonistic Renata Klein, whose daughter was a catalyst in the show's dramatic and mystery-driven thrust, and she indeed won Best Supporting Actress, just as she had for the 2017 Emmys. (Is anyone detecting a pattern here?) If only Dern could have also been nominated for her baffling reprisal of Diane, Twin Peaks' previously unseen FBI secretary.

Without any actors in the running for Best Actor for a Limited Series, Miniseries or TV Movie, Big Little Lies had only one award left to win. Despite being up against some pretty major competition in Fargo Season 3 and Feud: Bette and Joan, Big Little Lies ended its night earning the award for Best Limited Series, Miniseries or TV Movie. And before you can ask: yes, it also won that Emmy. For anyone who holds populist award ceremonies to be the end-all, be-all of critical applications, Big Little Lies was one of THE must-watch series from 2017. Of course, even people who don't put faith in the Golden Globes and Emmys would still agree with that claim.
