My Name Is Earl stars Jason Lee as the title character. Earl Hickey’s life had been full of mistakes and bad choices until, one day, he wins a small amount of money from the lottery. After he realizes that he has the winning ticket, he is hit by a car, losing his ticket in the process. While recovering in the hospital, Earl has an epiphany and decides to right every wrong he’s made in his life.

When we last saw Earl, he had gotten his G.E.D., a job, a new apartment, and even a girlfriend, and he seemed to be on the right track to becoming an adult. In an effort to help Joy, who had been arrested for stealing a truck (it was her third strike and she could face a life sentence in prison if convicted), Earl claimed that he stole the truck. He was then sentenced to 2 years in prison for his troubles.

On the season premiere of Earl, he will begin serving his sentence. Spoiler Warning: Earl will spend part of, if not all of, the season in jail. Earl realizes that the only way to survive jail is to join a gang. Which gang will he choose?

There are many shows on television that I don’t watch (there aren’t enough hours in a day or space on my TiVo), but My Name Is Earl is one of the few shows that I have absolutely zero interest in watching. Don’t get me wrong, I like Jason Lee, but I’d rather watch him in something like Mallrats. Seeing a preview for Earl while I’m watching another NBC show is more than enough for me.

The show must be doing something right, though. It was nominated for 6(!) Emmys this year, including Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Jaime Pressley. This past year, Jason Lee was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance, as well. So who knows, maybe I’m not giving the show enough credit. I just don’t care enough about it to give it a chance.
