First Look At Netflix's Lost In Space Reboot Is Inspirational And Slightly Unsettling

It's no secret that nostalgia is the most popular trend in TV and film production at the moment. As such, there are a bevy of classic properties that are currently being produced for a modern audience. On the small screen, we've seen this through revivals like Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, Roseanne, and Will & Grace. Now Netflix is looking to kick it even more old school, by bringing the classic sci-fi sitcom Lost in Space to a new generation. Information about the new series has been slim, but the first trailer has just hit, and its equal parts troublesome and awesome. Check it out.

The Robinsons are back, and it looks like the adventure won't be quite as campy and fun as the original series. Luckily for fans and cinephiles, all of our questions will be answered when the new Lost in Space arrives next month.

The trailer is narrated by House of Cards alum Molly Parker, who is playing matriarch Maureen Robinson in the new Lost in Space. We see as she and her family, in full space suit garb, board the famed Jupiter 2. During the voice over, Maureen speaks to how humankind has always evolved throughout the years. And since planet Earth is becoming unsustainable, it's up to the Robinsons and the other missions to find a new home for the species. But something tells me the Robinson family mission won't be going over particularly well.

The trailer provided the first looks at the cast, who all look pretty badass in their suits. Joining Molly Parker is Black Sails actor Toby Stephens as John Robinson who is the captain of the expedition. They'll be joined by the Robinson kids Judy (Falling Sky's Taylor Russell), Penny (newcomer Mina Sundwall), and of course Will (Sense8's Maxwell Jenkins). Will starred in the trailer's final moments, turning around to reveal his name tag on the suit. You can almost hear The Robot telling him he's in danger.

Since only the Robinson were shown in this announcement trailer, there are quite a few characters missing. General Hospital alum Ignacio Serricchio will be play badass Don West, and Parker Posey will play a female version of villain Dr. Smith. It's also unclear if and how The Robot will factor into the new series, and who will narrate the CPU's voice.

Perhaps the biggest question revolving around Lost in Space is its tone. The original sitcom was campy and fun, while the somewhat terrible 1998 movie went for an action/adventure feel. The above trailer for Netflix's version feels epic, but the three child actors will no doubt help keep it family friendly.

We'll just have to wait and see how it all shakes down when Lost in Space arrives April 13th on Netflix. In the meantime, check out our midseason premiere list to plan your next binge watch, and our cancellation list to see if your favorite show got the chop last year.
