Will Good Girls Be Renewed On NBC? Here’s What The Creator Said

Retta and Mae Whitman in Good Girls

Network TV is a funny thing. Because so much of the business revolves around ratings and advertising opportunities, there are a variety of factors that go into the decision regarding renewals. The process is even more nuanced for new shows, as it's easy for networks like ABC and NBC to axe less popular projects that are still in their infancy. The latter introduced a crime dramedy in the form of Good Girls, starring a trio of fantastic TV actors in Christina Hendricks, Retta, and Mae Whitman. The show ended its 10 episode run with a fantastic cliffhanger, but will it be brought back for Season 2? Here's what creator Jenna Bans had to say about it:

We just pitched Season 2 to [NBC's] Powers That Be on Friday and everyone seemed really engaged and enthusiastic about it. We're pretty excited about the places we're taking these three women. It's a darkly funny mix of the unexpected and also certain things our audience seems to be craving.

It looks like the fate of Good Girls is still very much in the air, although Jenna Bans (per her comments TV Line) feels hopeful and excited about the prospect of a sophomore season on NBC. Now the question is whether it'll get the chance, or if NBC will add Good Girls to its long list of shows cancelled after just one season on the tube.

Ratings wise, Good Girls started off strong when debuting to nearly 6 million people back in February. The show's first season had an understandable dip in ratings as it went on, although they averaged with around 4.5 million viewers per episode. Considering that Good Girls isn't as expensive as something like a superhero show or medical drama, it certainly seems feasible that NBC would bring it back for Season 2.

Good Girls revolves around three best friends, who find themselves seriously low on cash for a variety of relatable and real-life issues. In the pilot they decide to rob a grocery store bank branch, but things take an unexpected turn and they soon end up deeply involved in various organized crime plots. The trio of protagonists stumble through their unexpected venture into illegality, and are able to bring comedy in their various fish out of water moments.

But Good Girls also has terrifying drama, as the threat of violence or arrest is seemingly always in the periphery. Additionally, the show is very much about family, and the relationship between the three leading ladies. Their lives of crime are a result of things like a sick kid and divorce, and that emotional core may help the show get a second season on a notoriously cancel-happy network.

Good Girls' first season is available on NBC's app and On Demand. In the meantime, check out our midseason premiere list to plan your next binge watch. Plus our Amazon premiere list and superhero premiere list to ensure you don't miss a single episode.
