DC Universe Finally Finds Its Stargirl, Releases Official Synopsis

Brec Bassinger

DC Universe has finally cast the actress who will take on the lead role of Courtney Whitmore in its new Stargirl series, and released some cool new info about what fans can expect from the show. Nickelodeon alum Brec Bassinger, who played the lead role of Bella on Bella and the Bulldogs for two seasons, has been cast as the fledgeling superhero Stargirl.

If you haven't heard of Brec Bassinger, that's because her career is still fairly new. According to IMDB, the actress got her first screen credit in 2013 for the TV series The Haunted Hathaways, and then went on to rack up credits on shows like The Goldbergs, Code Black, School of Rock, Chicken Girls and All Night. Stargirl executive producer and writer Geoff Johns noted in a statement how glad he was to find Bassinger and have her sign on for the role, and said that her "warmth, strength, humor and positive energy are core to who Courtney Whitmore is," meaning that it sounds a lot like we'll get a very true representation of the character when she arrives on DC Universe to lead her own show.

While it was announced today that Brec Bassinger has been chosen for the role of Stargirl, DC Universe also released new details about the series that should help get fans excited for the show. Here's the character description, which tells us a lot about what we will see with regards to the plot when Stargirl debuts:

Courtney Whitmore (aka Stargirl) is smart, athletic and above all else kind. This high school teenager's seemingly perfect life hits a major speedbump when her mother gets married and her new family moves from Los Angeles, California to Blue Valley, Nebraska. Struggling to adapt to a new school, make new friends and deal with a new step-family, Courtney discovers her step-father has a secret; he used to be the sidekick to a superhero. "Borrowing" the long-lost hero's cosmic staff, Courtney becomes the unlikely inspiration for an entirely new generation of superheroes.

While we already knew that Courtney's actions would lead to her joining forces with the Justice Society of America to fight villains from the past and present, other information released today also revealed that the high school sophomore will end up inspiring "an unlikely group of young heroes" in the drama. We can also expect Stargirl to "reimagine" both the character and the JSA across its 13 episode season.

Stargirl was the sixth show announced for DC Universe, with word coming down that it was being worked on just a couple of months ago. The streaming service, which just went live on September 15, is clearly serious about bringing this character to to the forefront with her own show. She was previously seen in live action on Smallville and, most recently, in Legends of Tomorrow.

We don't know yet when Stargirl will hit DC Universe, but with lead Brec Bassinger in place, things should begin to move along pretty quickly for the production, which means we might get to feast our eyes on it before 2019 is out. Be sure to stay tuned to CinemaBlend, and we'll keep you up to date on all the latest Stargirl news.
