A Very Busy Kenan Thompson Shares Thoughts On His Future At Saturday Night Live

Saturday Night Live Kenan Thompson SNL Game of Thrones Avengers Family Feud sketch

Kenan Thompson has been on Saturday Night Live for 16 seasons and counting. That's a record, topping Darrell Hammond's previous run of 14 seasons. Thompson has been on SNL since 2003, watching so many fellow cast members come and go -- some fired, some leaving for movies or other TV projects. He's been part of the SNL shenanigans through three presidencies. So does Kenan plan to be there for a fourth president?

Oh, I would love it. I would love that. Hopefully it’ll be in 2020, but we’ll see what happens there. [laughs] It’s the best job in the world. I can’t see myself just walking away from it like that, even with how busy I’ve been lately. I’m doing another show on NBC called Bring the Funny.

As Kenan Thompson noted during his talk on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, he recently announced a new comedy competition series with Chrissy Teigen called Bring the Funny. Here's more about that.

He also has The Kenan Show pilot in the works, with Andy Garcia cast to star opposite Thompson in the single-camera comedy.

Last year, Kenan Thompson announced a new comedy called Saving Larry, which was later changed to Saving Kenan, and now The Kenan Show. That show, per Deadline, will star Thompson as a newly widowed dad determined to be everything for his kids while begrudgingly letting his persistent father-in-law Percy (Andy Garcia), a retired police officer, become more involved in their lives.

On top of that, Kenan Thompson is also bringing All That back to Nickelodeon, planning to executive produce the show in an active role. Thompson recently had a voice role in the movie Wonder Park, and has a guest voice role as himself in the upcoming animated series Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?. He also found time to be a guest judge on The Masked Singer.

Since Kenan Thompson has been on SNL since 2003, he's also taken over Darrell Hammond's record for the most celebrity impressions on the show. He brought out his recurring Steve Harvey impression for the May 4 Game of Thrones vs. Avengers cast Family Feud sketch, in the episode hosted by Adam Sandler.

Last year, Kenan Thompson won an Emmy for Outstanding Music and Lyrics, from the Chance The Rapper SNL episode song "Come Back Barack." He has two other SNL Emmy nominations -- another in the same category for the 2017 song "Last Christmas," and one for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Despite his busy schedule, Kenan Thompson sounds pretty sure he'll be sticking around on SNL. However, the jury is still out on Kate McKinnon. Will she leave SNL after the current Season 44? Time will tell. SNL continues this Saturday, May 11 with the great Emma Thompson as host and the Jonas Brothers as musical guest.

Gina Carbone

Gina grew up in Massachusetts and California in her own version of The Parent Trap. She went to three different middle schools, four high schools, and three universities -- including half a year in Perth, Western Australia. She currently lives in a small town in Maine, the kind Stephen King regularly sets terrible things in, so this may be the last you hear from her.
