Legacies is a spinoff of The Vampire Diaries, so there was a lot of crossover between the two shows in Season 1, and there's more to come in Season 2. The twist that Hope ended Season 1 with Clarke rather than her friends will give way to a Season 2 storyline that echoes a Vampire Diaries duo’s beloved dynamic. Damon and Bonnie’s, to be precise!
As Vampire Diaries fans will recall, Damon and Bonnie were not the best of friends when the show started out and for some time well after that. Bonnie was Elena’s lovely best friend and a powerful witch. Damon was the sinister vampire brother of Elena’s boyfriend. Their conflict was unavoidable.
When it comes to Legacies, Hope will find herself in a similar position to the one Bonnie and Damon once found themselves: trapped together in another world with someone she's less than fond of. Hope will wake up alive in the Season 2 premiere stuck wherever the pit sent her with Ryan Clarke. Legacies creator Julie Plec explained how the Season 2 story will echo Bonnie and Damon’s, telling TV Guide:
One of our favorite stories from Vampire Diaries was when Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Bonnie (Katerina Graham) got stuck in the prison world together. We love sticking people together who do not want to be together, and in this case Hope and Clarke are with each other and none too happy about it.
Hope and Clarke will have a lot to live up to when Legacies does its take. Bonnie and Damon had tremendous frenemy chemistry. Their dislike eventually turned into begrudging care for one another. Many fans loved their chemistry so much that they desired a romantic pairing between the two.
Despite Kat Graham and Ian Somerhalder’s sizzling chemistry, the characters simply remained very good friends. Will Legacies even get Hope and Clarke into the friend zone? Who knows? Well, the writers. Fans will have to stay tuned. Continuing on the topic of Hope and Clarke getting trapped together, Plec said:
I think when you're stuck with someone — we call it the 'trapped in the elevator' pitch — the end result of that is always going to either be you have a new and very important understanding of who that person is and maybe have been able to find your way to common ground and to bond, or you just really hate them even more than you hated them to begin with. So you'll have to tune in to find out what their future is.
So, Hope and Clarke will either hate each other even more intensely or they could gain a new understanding and respect for one another. I wonder which way it will play out. In the case of Bonnie and Damon, the latter happened. Bonnie and Damon’s relationship improved a lot after that storyline.
With another show in the franchise already having explored this angle, maybe Legacies will want to go another way with Hope and Clarke. “Hope” for the best? While how Hope and Clarke’s dynamic will play out is not known, a lot of other stuff about Season 2 is. Including that Legacies will introduce a crazy new vampire.
Matt Davis would “love” to see Caroline join Legacies for its second season. Will he get his wish? Will Julie Plec get hers to have Bonnie and Caroline on the show? Could a Legacies star get their desire to see a “darker side” to Hope fulfilled next season? Stay tuned.
