Where Disney +'s Loki Series Will Pick Up From

Tom Hiddleston as Loki in Thor: Ragnarok

Loki was killed by Thanos at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War, thus seemingly bringing an end to the character’s time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, that changed once it was announced the Asgardian God of Mischief would be leading his own Disney+ show, and now it’s been confirmed that rather than following along with the original Loki, the series will focus on the one who appeared in Avengers: Endgame.

You’ll recall that during Avengers: Endgame, one of the time periods the starring heroes traveled back to was the aftermath of the Battle of New York, and unfortunately, the Loki of that time period escaped custody and stole the Tesseract, a.k.a. the Space Stone. The Loki series will pick up with that Loki and show what happened to him following Endgame.

So for those keeping track at home, while the Loki we spent many movies with died a good man and tried to kill Thanos as his final act, that’s not who’s leading this TV show. This is the Loki who is still fully in villainous territory and now on the run after his attempt to conquer Earth failed.

As for where Loki goes from there, the better word to use is ‘when.’ The Disney+ series will see the troublemaker traveling to different time periods, including 1975, when Jaws was impressing moviegoers worldwide. It had also been rumored the show would feature a kid version of Loki, but for right now, that doesn’t appear to be in the cards.

Although the Thor film series is continuing with Thor: Love and Thunder, with Loki now making the jump to TV, it doesn’t look like he’ll be reuniting with his brother on the big screen. Which makes sense since Thor seems to finally have made peace with his Loki’s death and doesn’t need to deal with a past, malevolent version of him. Considering the character’s popularity, it makes sense to spin Loki off and have him lead his own adventures.

The Loki TV show is the first MCU project that’s exploring an alternate timeline post-Avengers: Endgame. Although Doctor Strange introduced the mulitverse to this franchise, it was Endgame that paved the way for exploring more conventional alternate realities. Whatever shenanigans this new Loki gets into won’t have any effect on the main MCU timeline.

There's still a lot we don’t know about Loki, including what other Marvel characters will be popping up in it. It’s unclear when the next big piece of information will arrive, but since the show is a little under two years away, expect it sooner rather than later.

Loki premieres on Disney+ in spring 2021, so keep checking back with CinemaBlend for more news regarding it and the other Marvel shows that will air on the streaming service, including The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision and Hawkeye.
