The Star Wars franchise is expanding quite a bit in the coming years with the franchise taking its first dive into a live-action television series with The Mandalorian. The upcoming Disney+ series won't just give fans more content to binge and obsess over, but according to Star Wars' Dave Filoni, will introduce another perspective behind what's happening in the universe.
If it wasn't clear from the trailer, the Mandalorian isn't the typical hero that has been seen in Star Wars films of the past. There's tons of characters with a stake in the Light vs. Dark Side game, but judging from Filoni's comments to IGN, this lone bounty hunter doesn't appear to be working for anything other than his own gain.
I think that what’s unique about Mando is that he’s basically a guy that’s just trying to make a living in the galaxy. He’s a survivor and he’s just trying to find his way on a day-to-day basis. And I think that leads to very interesting character moments and stories for him that are apart from some things we’ve seen the Jedi deal with more directly. He comes from a different angle because he’s a different type of character than they are.
It's not all that surprising a bounty hunter (like Boba Fett but also not) would try not to have a stake in the grand scheme of things. Working strictly for the Resistance or the First Order would limit his customer base, so why not profit on the sides of the war and get as rich as the loads of people viewers saw gambling on Canto Bight in Star Wars: The Last Jedi?
Dave Filoni compared the Mandalorian to Luke Skywalker, who was the shining beacon of doing the right thing in the original Star Wars trilogy. While Filoni didn't expressly say The Mandalorian's title character would be evil or anything like that, it does seem that interested audiences are being prepared for the fact he may not be the shining hero Star Wars typically likes to highlight.
This detail could make The Mandalorian quite a big deal for Star Wars, as it follows a title character that may not see this conflict as entirely black and white. That can open up the series to more themes that don't necessarily highlight good vs. bad, and even show that there's much more to Star Wars than Light vs. Dark. Such a deviation from the tradition is a big risk, though there's no denying Disney has spared no expense looking for the best and brightest to give this adventure every shot to win folks over.
