It won't be long before people everywhere (or at least the ones who subscribe to Disney+) get to see The Mandalorian. Early buzz has been positive on the series, though the jury's still out on whether Jon Favreau's live-action Star Wars series will be a galaxy-wide success. For example, what does franchise creator George Lucas think about the new series?
We have an answer from Disney CEO Bob Iger, though it may not be as telling of his thoughts as some may be hoping. Iger said George Lucas has visited The Mandalorian set, and hasn't had any complaints.
George has been fine.
It sounds super vague, though it's worth noting that George Lucas is a tough critic when it comes to his franchise. He was disappointed in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Iger revealed he complained that there was little Episode VII did that felt new. He told director Rian Johnson Star Wars: The Last Jedi was "beautifully made," but as many were quick to note, that wasn't explicit confirmation that he outright enjoyed it.
It's clear that George Lucas has no problem voicing his distaste with what directions Disney has taken Star Wars. So, if he isn't saying anything critical about The Mandalorian, as Bob Iger told Bloomberg, can fans assume that's as good a compliment as the Disney+ series will get from Lucas?
Possibly, though anyone in the business can say a set visit doesn't really give the full picture of what ends up in the final product. Even if George Lucas praised what he saw, it would only be in context of what he saw on set that day, and not the series itself. Point being, perhaps Lucas is reserving judgement until he's able to screen a few episodes, then he'll let people know what he thinks.
The real question, though, is if fans want what George Lucas wants. While Lucas was disappointed with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, he did go on the record and say he felt it was a movie fans would enjoy. That right there may indicate that Lucas understands what he wants, but also understands that what he wants is not always what the fandom wants. It's not like Lucas has been solely responsible for Star Wars' success, and not all his ideas (i.e., midi-chlorians) have been great.
