The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, one of Marvel’s new original series, is perhaps one of the most highly anticipated shows coming to Disney+, especially now that The Mandalorian has already started up. Now that filming has begun, Disney+ unveiled a new look at the upcoming series by way of concept art, which includes an up-close glimpse at Wyatt Russell's mysterious U.S. Agent character.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which is reportedly set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, will follow the adventures of Captain America’s heroic best friends, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). The welcomed concept art was showcased in an exclusive Disney+ special called Marvel Studios: Expanding the Universe, which previews all the Marvel greatness coming to Disney+. (You can use this link to sign up for a free 7-day trial.) In particular, the special revealed new costumes for the characters, so let's run down the list.

The Winter Soldier (Bucky Barnes)

Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier, spent the majority of Avengers: Infinity War recuperating in Wakanda before being dusted along with billions of others following Thanos' snap. Still, he managed to make it back in time to join in the big fight in Avengers: Endgame. The wayward soldier has been a bit lost, though, but the new concept art from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier revitalizes him. He's got a new suit, a fresh new hairdo, which was first teased in the D23 poster, and a look that says he's ready for action.

Although Bucky is also a time-displaced soldier like his friend Captain America (Chris Evans), he managed to form a buddy cop-esque friendship with the ever-loyal Sam Wilson, The Falcon. While little is known about how the two will come together in the post-blip world, Steve Rogers passed along his shield to Sam, bestowing upon him the mantle of Captain America at the end of Endgame. Yet, the concept art says something entirely different.

The Falcon (Sam Wilson)

Sam Wilson is definitely sporting the red, but the distinguished white and blue of Captain America's suit is gone. When The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was first announced, I thought the series would be set between the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. Why else would Sam continue calling himself the Falcon? Well, the new Disney+ series seems to have something else in mind altogether because Anthony Mackie denied he was Captain America. But, hey, at least Falcon looks cool.

While little is actually known about what the plot will be for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it's clear that Sam and Bucky will be duking it out with the returning Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl), who was last seen in Captain America: Civil War. The announcement of his return came during San Diego Comic-Con, and the villainous reprisal might mean HYDRA is back in the mix.

Zemo

Being one of the first Marvel shows to debut on Disney+, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier might work as setup for the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If Baron Zemo is back, and sporting his trademark creepy purple mask from the comic books, then it's possible that the villain is part of a new evil organization. Either that or Captain America's trip back in time possibly created a new kind of HYDRA. Whatever the case, Zemo is Enemy Number One for the Falcon and Winter Soldier.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is also bringing back the underutilized Agent Sharon Carter (Emily Van Camp), Peggy Carter's beloved niece. The series will reportedly not address the fact that she ever kissed Captain America in Civil War, but she will be working with S.H.I.E.L.D. to help take down Baron Zemo.

Sharon Carter

Just based on the concept art, it seems like Sharon Carter is getting that long overdue S.H.I.E.L.D. upgrade. She appears to be sporting a bulletproof vest, which she's chosen to wear over her usual pantsuit. That could mean Sharon will be out in the field alongside Falcon and Winter Soldier more often. They could use all the help they could get, and after Spider-Man: Far From Home, it's possible we'll finally get a real update on the situation inside Nick Fury's agency.

Last, but certainly not least, is a fresh new look at the elusive U.S. Agent character. It was confirmed that he would be played by Wyatt Russell at Disney's D23 Expo and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier concept art certainly makes him out to look like Captain America's exact replica.

U.S. Agent (John Walker)

In the comics, U.S. Agent has a convoluted history. In one version, he's a villain and in another, he was actually tapped to be Steve Roger's replacement. The red, white and blue concept art certainly seems to be leaning toward the latter. It makes me wonder whether he will be the new, darker version of Captain America who's working with Baron Zemo. Everything about the concept art resembles Steve Rogers' first Captain America suit, though, right down to the strapped helmet. While there's no evidence yet as to which side U.S. Agent's really on, another version of Cap might explain why Sam stayed on as Falcon.

Beyond the fantastic concept art, however, there's no new information detailing the plot of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend as news and show details begin trickling out. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will premiere on Disney+ in the fall of 2020. In the meantime, check out every film and TV series coming to the streaming service, which officially launched November 12 with The Mandalorian.
