Spider-Man In Disney+'s WandaVision? Tom Holland Is All About It

spider man thumbs up

While the future is still bright with the promise of the MCU's post-Endgame plans on the big screen, Marvel fans are also tuning their attention to the small screen now that Disney+ has a slate of super-powered content on the way. Loki and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier both look and sound interesting, but my money is all on WandaVision taking the prize as the most distinctly unique of the bunch. And it sounds like Spider-Man himself Tom Holland is webbed onto that same train of thought.

In between Spider-Man: Far From Home and the third Spidey movie that has yet to go into production, Tom Holland is promoting his new movie Onward, the latest feature from Pixar. (Check out what critics are saying.) Naturally, the Marvel web-slinger came up, and when Holland was asked which of the Disney+ TV series he'd most want Spider-Man to be in, here's what he told MTV International:

I think the WandaVision show looks really cool. It looks very stylistic, it almost looks like a bit of a sitcom the way they’ve shot it. I don’t really understand what is going on but I know it looks really cool. Paul and Elizabeth are like two of the nicest people I know, and I would love to work with them some more and get to know them a little bit better. So if I could put Spider-Man in the WandaVision show, that’d be great, Kevin Feige. So if you want to do that, you know my number.

We'll get to the more logical caveats in a minute, but for now, let's take a second to appreciate how amazing it would be if WandaVision, in all its sitcom-embracing weirdness, actually did find a way to bring Spider-Man in, giving fans a long-awaited live-action return to TV for the superhero. Spider-Man hasn't had a non-animated TV show since 1978, so wouldn't it be wild if the Disney+ series used Tom Holland to directly reference that project during its '70s-era scenes?

But okay, so while it would be stellar for WandaVision to call on Spider-Man to add some aerial magic to the sitcom-aping narrative, is that something that could actually happen at this point in time? The short answer is: probably not, given the fact that WandaVision is reportedly in the post-production phase, with the main chunk of filming completed. That doesn't solely make it impossible, mind you, but the story idea would probably have to be one-of-a-kind amazing in order to convince all involved to bring out the cameras anew.

Marvel movies are known for returning to principal production in order to take care of reshoots for certain scenes and sequences. It's unclear how WandaVision would be handling such things, though, so it's hard to tell how things will shake out in that respect.

Another possible vote against Tom Holland getting to reprise Spider-Man in WandaVision stems from the fact that Sony and Marvel's deal with Spider-Man is still a very specific agreement that mainly speaks to the theatrical side of the MCU. It's not exactly clear if any television talk has happened between the two companies, but even if there was, it seems like securing Tom Holland for a TV show would take more than a few bells and whistles, if not actual contract breaches.

Still, even when logic and corporate politics and signed paperwork get in the way of what Marvel fans are looking for, life always finds a way, right? Maybe they can get Tom Holland to reprise his Spidey role for something as equally bizarre as the main narrative. Such as having him pop in for a commercial break that pokes fun at ads of the applicable TV era. Or maybe Spider-Man can be inserted into the background of the suburban shots as one of the wacky next-door neighbors that have long been a television staple.

In the end, we can file this one under "Probalby Not Going To Happen, But Man, It Would Be Pretty Cool."

Though it was originally planned for a 2021 debut, WandaVision was shifted so that it can now premiere on Disney+ in December 2020. No doubt we'll hear a ton of new information about the show in the next ten months. Here's hoping one of those factoids involves Tom Holland going out and filming a secret scene.
