Star Wars: The Clone Wars has kicked off its final season with a bang and appears to be headed for an explosive ending. Sam Witwer, the actor behind Darth Maul, is well aware of how things go down and, according to him, you may have a different perspective on the Star Wars universe when it’s all over.

Sam Witwer promises the Clone Wars series finale will have lasting ramifications on the Star Wars franchise. In fact, he believes it’s going to change the way fans look at certain characters:

I’m very very excited for the audience to see it, because it’s consequential, it changes the way you think about certain things in Star Wars, changes the way you think about certain characters, and shows some really interesting core mythology stuff. I’m thrilled, and I’m shocked.

The Star Wars vet went on to explain to io9 that the finale can be viewed more as a four-part film as opposed to a set of TV episodes. He also praised showrunner Dave Filoni’s work, even going as far as declaring the finale to be the best script he’s ever read for the series:

The finale, that script, was the best Clone Wars script that I ever read. I think Dave has done a really very very cool thing. When I say script I don’t mean—when I’m talking about the finale, I’m talking about the last four episodes because it’s really meant to be seen as a movie. These Clone Wars arcs that go on for three to four episodes, they could also be cut together as movies and they work as one story, but this one really is meant to be seen in its entirety together, more so than anything else we’ve ever done.

One of the key elements of Star Wars: The Clone Wars that’s made it so endearing to hardcore fans is that it’s managed to preserve and build on Star Wars mythology in new and creative ways. Just this season, viewers were introduced to the “Bad Batch,” a team of “defective” clone troopers who possess traits that are still considered valuable by the army of the republic. Anyone curious to see what else the series adds to the lore can check it out on Disney+, which even offers a free 7-day trial.

Sam Witwer’s Darth Maul is a prime example of how Clone Wars can drop bombshells, as the series marked the first time that viewers learned of Maul’s survival following his duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The official trailer for the season teased a fight between Maul and fan favorite Ahsoka Tano, which could indeed be a major event in the finale. While faithful viewers undoubtedly know that both characters will walk away from the fight alive, the circumstances behind it and the immediate effects it will have on the world as a whole remain to be seen.

If Sam Witwer’s comments and Dave Filoni’s track record are any indication, fans could be in for fitting conclusion. Star Wars: The Clone Wars is currently streaming on Disney+.
