God Friended Me fans are still mourning the loss of the show. This week, CBS announced that it cancelled the dramedy after two seasons. There was one slight silver lining in the form of God Friended Me getting a two-hour series finale. In some not-so-uplifting news, its cancellation was a big surprise for the cast of the CBS series.

Brandon Micheal Hall plays Miles Finer, the skeptic who gets friended by God on Facebook. In an Instagram Q&A, Hall opened up about learning that God Friended Me had been cancelled, and how difficult the news has been. On how he took finding out there would be no Season 3, Hall told Instagram (via TVLine):

[It's a] hard pill to swallow. [The decision] was completely out of our control. Swallowing the pill a couple of days ago, I was able to reflect… about the time spent the past two years working on this show, and… I’m [so] grateful.

It sounds like Brandon Micheal Hall has tried to find the bright side to the news. Hence, his appreciation for the experience he had doing God Friended Me for the two seasons it did have. The actor had previously opened up about how starring in the series had impacted his views on religion. Hall does have that to take with him going forward after the cancellation.

Speaking of, Brandon Micheal Hall shared his gratitude about getting to work with the cast and crew of God Friended Me. They have clearly developed a strong bond with one another over the past two seasons of making the show. Hall said that not working with them is the “hardest thing” about the cancellation and shared his gratitude for viewers’ reception to the series:

...about a black atheist finding his way, [and] not through religion but through spirituality. I’m grateful to have been able to share this piece of art with each and every one of you.

Thankfully for fans, there are more episodes left. However, making the cancellation news all the sadder is that it will not end with its planned Season 2 finale or a series ender. Like a lot of shows, God Friended Me was forced to cease production early on its current season due to the coronavirus. Season 2 will accordingly end short of its original episode order.

Brandon Micheal Hall is not alone in speaking out after God Friended Me’s cancellation. Hall’s co-star, Violett Beane (Cara), responded to the cancellation on social media, writing a message to fans on Instagram. Whatever her social media platform of choice, Beane wrote:

Unfortunately this is the end of the road for the God Squad. We found out yesterday that our show will not be continuing for a third season. I’ve been so humbled by all of the messages I’ve received from all of you throughout these last two years, about how much these stories have impacted your lives and helped you through some tough times. That’s all any of us could’ve hoped for and I’m glad we were able to give you that for the two years that we did.

The cancellation came after God Friended Me got great news during its first season. It was picked up for a full season shortly after it premiered in fall 2018, before getting renewed for a second in early 2019. Fast forward to 2020, and God Friended Me will not be returning for a third season.

At least God Friended Me was able to move past the heartbreaking plot point that occurred earlier in Season 2. It returned after a brief hiatus. Sadly, it will not return after its season finale. Time will tell if the episode that closes it out will give fans the closure they or its characters need.

New episodes of God Friended Me air Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. The dramedy will take its final bow with a two-hour series finale set to air on Sunday, April 26, at the same time and place. For more television options to consider watching, check out this spring’s premieres.
