Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Has Landed A Familiar Director

Star Trek Anson Mount Captain Pike CBS All Access

Just when it seemed like the Star Trek franchise couldn't possibly have another television show in development, fans of the original series and Discovery Season 2 got a nice surprise. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is in development and will focus on the adventures of the Enterprise before the events of the original Star Trek series.

Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn will all reprise their Discovery roles as Captain Pike, Spock, and Number One, but they won't be the only familiar faces returning to the franchise. As is almost tradition at this point, Star Trek actor and director Jonathan Frakes has confirmed he will be a part of the recently announced series:

I've been asked to direct, and I'm looking forward to it very much.

The news, which the actor/director revealed to Syfy Wire, should come as little surprise considering Jonathan Frakes has been a frequent collaborator on Star Trek both in front and behind the camera. Frakes has been a director for all of the new Star Trek shows in recent years and unless something changes between now and filming, he'll likely be directing episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and any future projects.

Beyond his relationship with Star Trek being a factor of why he's good for the job, Jonathan Frakes also revealed that he has a working relationship with the three major stars that have been teased. Some of which happened during Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery and on science fiction shows elsewhere:

I've had great experiences with all three of them. Anson and I worked through finding Captain Pike. And Ethan and I worked through finding who Spock was. And the mantle of Spock, in particular, was so complicated and so emotionally taxing and was such huge shoes to fill, and Ethan felt it. Rebecca and I have a long relationship from back on The Librarians, and we have a fabulous working shorthand, so it will be great getting back to the floor with three old friends.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds which will cover the Enterprise the decade before Captain Kirk took command of the ship. The series is said to have come into existence thanks in large part to fans who really enjoyed the performances of Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn in Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery. With this, viewers will finally get more television adventures of the pre-Kirk Enterprise and possibly, some more details on the upbringing of Spock and his relationship with his adopted sister, Michael Burnham.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds does not have a release date as of yet, but there's plenty of Star Trek content to check out on CBS All Access right now.
