Lucifer is the devilish show that just won't quit, as proven that Season 6 renewal after the show's second cancellation. That said, the team behind Lucifer had to change things up for Season 5 to accompany that development. The writers had to figure out how to undo their original ending to make room for Season 6.

While Lucifer’s showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich were hard at work on Lucifer’s series finale, they got a proposal. What about Season 6? At first, Henderson and Modrovich were opposed to continuing, not thinking it was a great idea. The duo likened the change to the one regarding Season 5’s expansion to run for more episodes, which meant they reconsidered. Explaining why their mindset changed, Modrovich told EW:

What we realized is that the last bit of that [series] finale episode was actually a lot of great stories sped up just to give us a satisfying ending for all our characters. We literally lobbed off Act 6 and went, 'Let's take what happens in Act 6 in a scene and dive into it, and really explore how are characters end up where they ended up.' So, that ended up being our nugget for Season 6.

There you have it. Instead of saying “no” and not budging, Lucifer’s showrunners decided to extend Act 6. The decision means fans of the series will get to see a more in-depth approach to how Lucifer wraps up for all of its characters. Otherwise, it sounds like how the series initially ended could have run the risk of feeling rushed.

So, the first half of Lucifer’s fifth season will not be the sad occasion it once was, as it won't be the beginning of the end. This behind-the-scenes reveal gives fans an insight into the fact that Lucifer’s future did not solely rest on business factors coming from Netflix and WBTV. There was also a creative angle to it.

Upon the news that Lucifer would end with Season 5, fans quickly took action, campaigning for Season 6 as a continuation of their hard-fought battle to get Lucifer picked up following its cancellation on Fox. Lucifer concluding with Season 5 would have meant the supernatural drama only got two more seasons of life after fans’ popular campaign. Lucifer’s co-showrunner Ildy Modrovich responded to the outpouring from fans, saying that they should not push Netflix for Season 6. At the time, Modrovich expressed her contentment with getting to wrap up Lucifer with its fifth season.

That ending will remain, just not in Season 5. How Lucifer’s various characters arrive at that point in Season 6 will now be given more time, and that is probably something that fans are happy to hear. It is tough enough to say goodbye to any show. To feel rushed out of the room is an even worse feeling. Just ask Game of Thrones fans.

Between getting the showrunners, Tom Ellis, and the rest of the cast on board, it took some time for Lucifer to get the go-ahead for Season 6. Now, it is happening, and Ellis is working on staying fit to reprise his role. You have to appreciate his dedication.

As developments continue for Season 6, Lucifer fans are anxiously awaiting the penultimate chapter of their supernatural favorite. The trailer for Season 5 has dropped, and between Chloe getting a whole new look and Tom Ellis taking on dual roles, it is going to be pretty epic. Stay tuned and grateful that Lucifer’s showrunners decided to carry on for another season.

Part 1 of Lucifer Season 5 will premiere on August 21 on Netflix, making it one of its 2020 premieres. While waiting for Part 2 and Season 6, check out what fall’s schedule has in store.
