Will Grey's Anatomy Continue Meredith And DeLuca's Relationship? Here's The Latest

Giacomo Gianniotti as DeLuca

There are long running TV shows, and then there's Grey's Anatomy. The ABC medical drama is gearing up for its whopping 17th season on the air, after its previous season was cut short when sets were shut down. Fans are eager to see what happens when Grey's finally returns, particularly related to Meredith's complicated relationship with Andrew DeLuca. And now DeLuca himself actor Giacomo Gianniotti has addressed that upcoming plot point.

After Derek's death in Season 11, fans struggled to watch see Meredith find new love on Grey's Anatomy. A few choices came and went, but the only suitor to stick around was surgical resident Andrew DeLuca. The pair often collide in unique ways, most recently as a result of DeLuca's mental health struggles. Giacomo Gianniotti teased what's to come in Season 17, saying:

They're yin and yang in the sense that they're in different places in their lives. They've had different experiences in their lives, and these are the things that complete each other. But I think that they have a good shot.

Well, that's certainly hopeful. Meredith and DeLuca's relationship has already had its share of peaks and valleys, including more than one trip to jail. Season 16 of Grey's Anatomy didn't get to wrap up the last year's arc, so fans are eager to see what comes next whenever the beloved drama returns to the small screen.

Giacomo Gianniotti's comments to ET are sure to make the MerLuca shippers out there very happy. Their relationship was a bit rocky throughout Season 16, as they're packed with baggage and trying to navigate how to interact with each other. DeLuca's mental health was shown declining throughout this time, with his career seemingly in jeopardy after various clashes with Bailey. But it looks like there's still hope for his relationship with Grey's Anatomy's title character.

Despite how strained their romantic relationship might be, Meredith and DeLuca clearly have strong feelings for each other. That sometimes results in one of them getting in a potentially dangerous situation, leading to plenty of onscreen drama. Many fans are waiting for them to truly be happy, which Meredith not having a true romantic partner since Derek's death years ago. Giacomo Gianniotti thinks they've got a shot, so we'll just have to see what Grey's Anatomy has up its sleeves when returning to televisions.

It's currently unclear when Grey's Anatomy's Season 17 will premiere, as fall TV isn't expected to start up on time. Production needs to kick back up in order to revisit Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, and for the rabid fanbase to see how the pandemic will be addressed in-universe. There's also been some recent cast shake-ups, so clearly showunner Krista Vernoff has a vision for the future.

CinemaBlend will keep you updated on all things Grey's Anatomy as details become public. In the meantime, check out our fall premiere list to plan your next binge watch.
