Disney+'s She-Hulk TV Show Finally Got Its First Update In Ages

She-Hulk (Marvel Comics)

Marvel updates have been few and far between over the last several months and, though we did just receive a major bit of casting news, fans are still looking for more. One subject that the Marvel faithful probably have the most questions about are the Disney+ shows that are scheduled to drop over the next few years. Well, thankfully, we finally have a new update on Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk, as the show has just filled a major position.

She-Hulk has reportedly tapped director Kat Coiro to helm the show’s pilot as well as several additional episodes, per Deadline. The trade also reports that Coiro is set to serve as an executive producer on the series as well. The Marvel Cinematic Universe project will unite Coiro with Ricky and Morty alum Jessica Gao, who serves as the show’s head writer and showrunner.

Up until this point, Kat Coiro has mostly helmed episodes of comedies, and her resume is pretty impressive. Over the past few years, she’s worked on hit series like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Shameless, Modern Family and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. She’s also made a name for herself in the realm of independent filmmaking with And While We Were Here and Life Happens. Her latest film, Marry Me, stars Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson and Maluma and is set to hit theaters this coming Valentine’s Day.

Specific plot details on She-Hulk are scarce at the moment, though the show has reportedly been written. We also know it’s set to focus on Bruce Banner’s lawyer cousin Jennifer Walters who, in the comics, becomes a green superheroine following a blood transfusion from her cousin.

Coiro’s experience telling character-driven stories and her work in comedy are likely what got her on Marvel Studios’ radar. While She-Hulk is sure to have plenty of serious moments, there’s plenty of humor to be mined from a tall, green woman in a courtroom or testing the waters in the dating scene. But on the other hand, the director can help humanize Jennifer Walters and help audiences understand and relate to her.

Of course, there’s still the question of who will actually get to play the lead role. Marvel Studios hasn’t given any official indication as to who it’s eyeing for the part, but reports seemed to suggest the studio was looking for an “Allison Brie-type” Brie has since responded to the rumors and, while she did not confirm that she’s pursuing the role, she didn’t seem to shoot down the possibility, either. Aside from Walters, it also looks like Mark Ruffalo will reprise his role as Bruce Banner for the show.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about She-Hulk but, in a time in which MCU news is rare, it’s just good to know the show is still making progress. As of right now, reports point to She-Hulk being released on Disney+ sometime in 2022.
