Could Gilmore Girls Get Another Season After Netflix Revival? Here's What The Co-Creator Says

Gilmore Girls’ original run came to an end back in 2007, and fans quickly clamored for a return to Stars Hollow. Nearly a decade later, in 2016, they got their wish in the form of Netflix’s limited series revival, which spanned four parts. Naturally, the question of whether Gilmore Girls could get another season after the short-lived revival has repeatedly come up. What does the series’ creator have to say?

Amy Sherman-Palladino weighed in on the lingering question at the Woodstock Film Festival’s virtual panel. Another season of Gilmore Girls has looked less likely throughout the years, even though when the cast expressed their thoughts on continuing they seemed open to it. Where do things stand now? Well, it has a lot to do with the cast and creators’ busy schedules. On what is in the way, Sherman-Palladino said (via TVLine):

There’s no [obstacle] behind it except for lives and people doing [other] things. [A Year in the Life] was one of those kismet moments where we were kind of all looking at each other and going, ‘Well, let’s take a couple of months and hang out together and remind each other why we drove each other crazy.’ And it was a wonderful experience. I really do believe that if the time is right and the girls are where they need to be in their lives [it could happen].

In other words, the (Hollywood) stars would have to align again for another visit to Stars Hollow. When it came time to do the original revival mini, A Year in the Life, the timing ended up coming together for the characters’ brief return. On that note, Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino has certainly anticipated the possibility of more Gilmore Girls thanks to a loophole in her contract with Amazon.

As for Netflix, it would stand to reason that the streaming giant would also be interested in another season of Gilmore Girls. Before it gifted subscribers with its daily top ten reveal, Netflix had acknowledged back in 2017 that Gilmore Girls was a top-ten performer. Of course, it is not as simple as hopes and dreams coming true. There has to be clearance in the cast’s schedule as Amy Sherman-Palladino explained, saying:

Lauren is in two series right now. And Alexis is in Handmaid’s Tale. They all have things… But if that [kismet] moment presents itself again [we’d do it] in a hot second.

Not to mention, Amy Sherman-Palladino is a bit busy herself. She has the critical favorite, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which is heading into Season 4 on Amazon. Meanwhile, Gilmore Girls’ leading ladies have remained super busy. As Sherman-Palladino pointed out, Lauren Graham has two shows, one of which is the NBC crowd-pleaser Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, which has been renewed for Season 2.

Lauren Graham is also leading Disney+’s Mighty Ducks TV reboot series. Graham will take on the role of the hockey coach of the new underdog team. (I hope it takes some cues from Cobra Kai.) As for Alexis Bledel, she remains on The Handmaid’s Tale heading into Season 4, so she is also swamped. Hopefully, the dynamic duo can find a way to reprise their mother/daughter roles on Gilmore Girls.

The series certainly left off in a way that begs for a return. Lauren Graham has proposed a Christmas movie as a means for Gilmore Girls to make its way back on screen. Considering the popularity of the holiday movie genre, it is a pretty good idea in my book. Would there be enough time to unravel one of the largest questions looming over the ending of the Gilmore Girls revival, though?

It would be an interesting thing to squeeze in for sure. Gilmore Girls and the limited revival Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life are currently streaming on Netflix along with lots of 2020 premieres. While you wait to see if another Netflix revival ever happens, check out this fall’s schedule for a few good feels.
