The Crown Season 4 has arrived and, as you can imagine, fans are eager to jump back into the history of the Royal Family. While the critically acclaimed Netflix show is typically accompanied by hype, this season was especially exciting for many, as it introduces Princess Diana and covers her whirlwind romance with Prince Charles – as well as the issues the couple later experienced. However, this is stirring up a bit of controversy, as friends of Prince Charles are now calling out the show for its depiction of those events.
Some of Prince Charles’ closest confidantes have claimed that The Crown has “hijacked and exploited” the lives of its subjects. They also seem to take issue with the show bringing up “very difficult times,” particularly the relationship struggles between the Prince and Princess:
This is drama and entertainment for commercial ends being made with no regard to the actual people involved who are having their lives hijacked and exploited. In this case, it's dragging up things that happened during very difficult times 25 or 30 years ago without a thought for anyone's feelings. That isn't right or fair, particularly when so many of the things being depicted don't represent the truth.
The Crown appears to be going all in on exploring Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s tumultuous time together, including the extramarital affairs that marred their marriage. These statements from the Palace (via DailyMail) further claim that the series paints the two in “an unflattering light,” and they even go as far as to say the show is “trolling” through its method of storytelling
The new series paints the Prince and Duchess in a very unflattering light but at least at the start of reality shows like The Only Way Is Essex they admit that some scenes have been invented for entertainment. There is no sense of telling carefully nuanced stories – it's all very two-dimensional. This is trolling with a Hollywood budget. The public shouldn't be fooled into thinking this is an accurate portrayal of what really happened.
The Palace insiders also provided Prince William’s alleged thoughts on The Crown Season 4. And according to them, he’s not too happy with it:
The Duke of Cambridge is none too pleased with it. He feels that both his parents are being exploited and being presented in a false, simplistic way to make money.
So far, Season 4 of The Crown has received positive reviews from critics, with some admitting that creative liberties were made when it comes to the story. We’ll likely never know every single detail about those years in Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s lives. All we can do is view the show as entertainment, and if we have questions, make sure we do our due diligence by researching the information that is available.
