No Big Deal, Just Kelly Clarkson Opening Up To Garth Brooks About His Music Helping Her Through Divorce

Kelly Clarkson in The Kelly Clarkson Show

It’s no secret that 2020 has not been the best year for entertainer Kelly Clarkson. Since announcing her divorce from husband and manager Brandon Blackstock, she has spoken openly on her daytime talk show about the challenging time she has experienced. Most recently, Kelly Clarkson spoke with country superstar Garth Brooks about how his music is helping her cope with her divorce.

Kelly Clarkson featured the Grammy-winning Garth Brooks on The Kelly Clarkson Show as a special guest this week, and the two mega-stars spoke on not only Brooks' historic career, but also about going through a high-profile divorce while trying to protect their children. During their chat, Clarkson revealed how Brooks’ signature song “The Dance” is helping her at this difficult moment.

I’ve got to tell you this. OK, so I’m going through a divorce. And there’s been like a lot of books and people always give you stuff to like, help, especially when you have kids and stuff. And I know that you’ve been divorced as well. Man, there’s always like so much shame and guilt in it. Everybody kind of sends you stuff. And I was like just kind of working through it and I couldn’t quite nail down the feeling. You don’t want to crap on it, like you don’t want to say that didn’t count or matter, but you don’t know what to put in it because it didn’t work out how you wanted. So, anyway I kid you not, I was listening to my playlist and 'The Dance' came on and I was like, ‘That’s it.’

Kelly Clarkson went on to explain that, even though she's known the song very well for most of her life, its actual message didn’t resonate with her until after the divorce proceedings started. In her words:

Clarkson: What’s interesting is I sang that song from childhood and it never hit me.Brooks: That’s a great song right there, that’s the character of a great song.Clarkson: It hit me, I was literally bawling in my own house… It is true, I think a lot of people who go through such a devastating situation, there’s a lot of grief in it, a lot of loss, a lot of change.

While it's nice to know music is helping Clarkson through the moment, she has also talked on her show about going to therapy to cope with the emotions related to her divorce. She has even mentioned placing her children in therapy for the same reason. This seems more understanding given recent developments with her soon-to-be-ex and his father, regarding finances and child support.

Since coming back to her talk show, the singer has spoken a few times about her divorce inspiring her current music. Like many musicians, Clarkson’s best music seems to follow a major breakup. I mean this is the same woman who sang hits such as “Never Again,” “Behind These Hazel Eyes” and the iconic sing-along breakup anthem “Since You’ve Been Gone.” We'll just have to wait and see if any big hits come from this unfortunate time in Clarkson's life.
