The Mandalorian Revealed A New Star Wars Spinoff In Finale Post-Credits Scene

Disney+

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD for the Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian.

The Mandalorian wrapped the second season with a game-changer of a finale that has major implications not only for the third season, but for the Star Wars saga as a whole. Mando ultimately said the heartbreaking but inevitable farewell to Grogu (a.k.a. Baby Yoda) when Luke Skywalker came to the rescue. That said, there was a post-credits scene that delivered another major twist to the saga: another spinoff is on the way, centered on none other than Boba Fett.

Yes, the rumors are true! Despite a Boba Fett spinoff not being among those shared in the recent announcement of the future of Disney+, the post-credits scene revealed that a new show called The Book of Boba Fett is on the way, and it already has a premiere date: December 2021. This reveal confirms that Boba Fett's return was not just for the sake of some badass action sequences or delivering a fan-favorite familiar face, but to expand the Star Wars saga even further.

The Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian took a page out of the original trilogy with the post-credits sequence, taking the action back to a location last seen in the Star Wars chronology in Return of the Jedi, which is pretty fitting for Boba Fett considering his fate in that movie. The scene opened on what was formerly Jabba the Hutt's palace. Bib Fortuna had stepped up and taken Jabba's place in the years since Return of the Jedi, but his fate ultimately wasn't any better than that of his former boss.

The beginning of his end came when Ming-Na Wen's Fennec Shand blasted her way down the iconic staircase and cleared the room, killing some of Bib Fortuna's henchmen and scattering the rest. In a move that would have probably made Princess Leia proud, Fennec took one look at Bib Fortuna's chained Twi'lek slave, shot her chain to free her, and nodded for her to run. Then came Boba Fett, who gave Bib Fortuna just enough time to lie that he was happy to see him after thinking he was dead before Boba Fett went ahead and killed him.

The post-credits awesomely ended with Boba Fett shoving Bib Fortuna's body off the throne and sitting down, while Fennec Shand got her hands on a drink and sat down at his right hand, swigging straight from the bottle. The Book of Boba Fett has been set up pretty awesomely, and is only a year off! Honestly, kudos to Disney for keeping a tight lid on this spinoff when so many other shows were revealed just a little over a week ago.

Interestingly, it was also revealed recently that The Mandalorian Season 3 will release around Christmas 2021, so it's possible that Disney+ will be releasing new episodes of two Star Wars shows at the same time. That said, it's not yet clear how many episodes will comprise The Book of Boba Fett; if the run is short, it's possible that the spinoff will lead up to the third season of The Mandalorian rather than run concurrently. We'll have to wait and see.

Unfortunately, the Mandalorian Season 2 finale is the last dose of Star Wars content we'll get for a while, but there is plenty to watch and rewatch on Disney+ now. For some viewing options set elsewhere than the galaxy far, far away, check out our 2021 winter and spring premiere schedule.
