The Boys Showrunner Explains Unique ‘Worry’ In Writing Season 3 For Amazon

Stormfront in The Boys Season 2

The streaming war has been in full swing over the past few years, as studios like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon all release original content. The latter service has found great success with its dark, R-rated superhero show The Boys, which recently wrapped its second season. Showrunner Eric Kripke brought the comic books to life for the small screen, and he recently shared the unique reason he's been 'worried' when writing Season 3.

Given just how popular and acclaimed The Boys has bee since its debut on Amazon, we'll likely be seeing more of the dark superhero adventure in the years to come. Eric Kripke is already at work on the next installment of the comic book adaptation, writing all sorts of over the top violence and dark comedy in the process. Kripke recently spoke to this process, and the funny worry he had while working on the upcoming season. As he put it,

The thing that has worried me about Season 3 is that it has become really fun and breezy to write again. That worries me. It’s feeling enjoyable. I should be in intense, deep introspection for this. I know, obviously, that every season of a television show gets a little bit harder because all of your original best instincts to explore have been explored. So, you have to start going to some of the areas that it wouldn’t at first have occurred you to go to in those stories, and those are always a little trickier to make feel as big and as fascinating as the stuff you hit early on. So, it’s challenging.

The kills and over the top dialogue that occurs in The Boys is successful because of the shock factor. But in the end these wild moments come from Eric Kripke's mind. And his ability to jump back in and write more of these scenarios is part of what worried Eric Kripke. This is especially true as he approaches the third year slump that hits so many TV shows.

Eric Kripke's comments to Consequence of Sound show the type of pressure that comes with running a successful TV show. While the first two seasons often pour out of writers who are rife with creative ideas, it's hard to meet the same success as shows reach a certain age. Kripke is obviously feeling the pressure, despite how he's able to jump back into the world of The Seven so easily.

Obviously the writer/showrunner of The Boys is joking about needing introspection, as his penchant for handling such dark subject matter might be a warning sign for some. But he also addressed the serious side to continuing the show's story in Season 3, and the pressure that come. The last season had even more epic twist, turns, and superhero clashes. So there's no telling what's to come when The Boys returns to Amazon.

The Boys is currently streaming in its entirety on Amazon. Be sure to check out our midseason premiere list to plan your next binge watch.
