The Mandalorian's Ahsoka Tano Spinoff Rumored To Bring Another Star Wars Rebels Fave To Live-Action

Among the ways The Mandalorian Season 2 grabbed people’s attention late last year was featuring Ahsoka Tano, a longtime player in the realm of Star Wars animation, in live-action. Rosario Dawson debuted as Ahsoka in the episode “The Jedi,” and just a few weeks later, it was announced that the character was getting her own spinoff series. Word’s now come in that Ahsoka will reportedly also feature another prominent character from Star Wars Rebels: Sabine Wren.

According to Kessel Run Transmissions, the Ahsoka series is now filling the role of the Star Wars Rebels sequel series, as opposed to another animated series being forthcoming, which was rumored to be in development, but never officially announced. It was also briefly mentioned that Sabine Wren will supposedly be a recurring character in Ahsoka, which makes sense for Rebels fans, as that series teased a partnership between Sabine and Ahsoka Tano in its final minutes.

For those who didn’t watch Star Wars Rebels (and needless to say that SPOILERS are ahead), the show ended with a peek at what Rebels’ main characters were up to following the fall of the Empire, i.e. approximately five years after the series’ main narrative concluded. Sabine Wren decided to team up with Ahsoka Tano to find Ezra Bridger, who had disappeared to parts unknown in an effort to remove big bad Grand Admiral Thrawn from Lothal. You can watch Rebels’ epilogue scene below for full context:

Now we cut back to “The Jedi,” where, after defeating Morgan Elsbeth in combat, Ahsoka Tano demanded to know where Grand Admiral Thrawn was located. With The Mandalorian set approximately five years after Return of the Jedi, that means Ahsoka has spent half a decade looking for Thrawn, and if she can find him, then it’s a good bet Ezra Bridger is nearby since he and Thrawn disappeared together. It is worth noting that after “The Jedi” aired, The Mandalorian executive producer Dave Filoni, who co-created Ahsoka Tano with George Lucas for Star Wars: The Clone Wars, didn’t clarify whether or not Ahsoka and Sabine joining forces at the end of Star Wars Rebels was set before or after what Ahsoka went through in The Mandalorian.

In any case, if the rumor is indeed true that Sabine Wren will appear in Ahsoka, then one would imagine that Star Wars Rebels fans will finally get to see the search for Ezra Bridger unfold, so it makes sense why she would appear on a recurring basis. This would add to the ranks of animated Star Wars characters who’ve made the jump to live-action, with that lineup including Bo Katan, Saw Gerrera and even Boba Fett. Although Tiya Sircar voiced Sabine in Rebels, if the show is following the same approach The Mandalorian’s took with Ahsoka Tano, then a different actress will be cast to play Sabine in live-action.

It’s also worth mentioning for those unfamiliar with Star Wars Rebels that just like Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin, Sabine Wren is a Mandalorian. She even wielded the Darksaber for a brief period before giving it to Bo Katan (though it unfortunately later ended up in Moff Gideon’s hands) It’s unclear how much Sabine’s Mandalorian background would factor into the Ahsoka series beyond her being a skilled combatant, but because Ahsoka, The Mandalorian and Rangers of the New Republic are primed to someday culminate in a “climactic story event,” it’s possible that Din’s personal quest will eventually lead to him crossing paths with Sabine.

We here at CinemaBlend will be sure to let you know if/when Sabine Wren’s inclusion in Ahsoka is officially confirmed, as well as keep you updated on any other major news concerning the upcoming Star Wars series.
