Sounds Like Sunday's Emotional When Calls The Heart Scene Was Actually Awful To Shoot, Per Erin Krakow

Erin Krakow in When Calls the Heart

Last Sunday’s episode of Hallmark’s When Calls the Heart ended in a tear-jerking and emotional scene. Mountie Nathan Grant (Kevin McGarry) professed his feelings for school teacher Elizabeth Thornton (Erin Krakow), shocking Elizabeth and the viewers watching. Nathan admitted he’s “in love” with Elizabeth, vowing to quit his job as a Mountie to ensure Elizabeth would never lose him the way she lost her late husband, Jack. Krakow is speaking out about how it really felt to shoot that emotional scene.

Erin Krakow and Kevin McGarry spoke to ET about the difficult scene, and Krakow mentioned that during filming, it seemed like the world was against them. Between the heat and the mosquitos, the actress said there were airplanes flying overhead, but it was still a heartbreaking moment to film together. Krakow explained:

We were just sitting in a tent together, trying to avoid the heat and the mosquitoes that were swarming us by the pond. We were even trying to get that scene out between airplanes flying overhead. There were some elements that were stacked against us a bit, but no, I think we discussed it, we spent the time together and it's a very heartbreaking scene.

Erin Krakow mentioned that while she’s done scenes over the years where it felt like it was useful to take a little space to herself before filming an emotional scene like this one, this wasn’t the case this time. The actress thinks she and Kevin McGarry discussed the scene and what they wanted to get out of it, and even though not everything worked out the way they had hoped while filming, the end result still had the emotional impact necessary.

The actress continued to talk about the scene itself and what was going through Elizabeth’s mind at the time of Nathan’s confession. Saying that Elizabeth is simply trying to follow her heart and gut, and make a decision that’s right for her. Krakow said:

I think there's a line in the scene, something like, ‘If I stay, it'll only make things harder,’ and I think that was probably the mantra that was running through her head. That sense of, ‘This is an impossible situation -- I'm just trying to follow my heart, my gut here, and make a decision, and you are making it impossible’

Erin Krakow has played Elizabeth Thatcher Thornton on When Calls the Heart since the series began and knows a thing or two about making decisions as the passionate young teacher. Although Kevin McGarry’s Nathan Grant has only been on the show since Season 6, she quickly stole his heart, and he became another one of Elizabeth’s suitors before long. The big question for the audience now is, just where will the two end up after Nathan's confession?

When Calls the Heart airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Hallmark Channel.
