Batwoman Season 2 Has Cast Its Black Mask

Javicia Leslie as Ryan Wilder/Batwoman for Batwoman Season 2.

The CW's Batwoman just delivered a shocker in the case of Kate Kane and her disappearance that led to the rise of a brand new Batwoman, and the show isn't out of twists now that Ryan Wilder is wearing the cape and the cowl. Gotham City is about to get more dangerous as Batwoman has found its Black Mask for the remainder of the second season.

Deadline reports that Designated Survivor alum Peter Outerbridge will play the villainous Black Mask in the CW superhero series. Roman Sionis, a.k.a. Black Mask, will be a major part of the storyline throughout the rest of the season. Pragmatic and charismatic CEO Roman plays the “white knight” against Gotham’s corrupt systems while Black Mask is an evil mastermind with a deep hatred of The Crows and masked vigilantes. The villain is willing to tear down Gotham to enact his revenge.

Peter Outerbridge is no stranger to comic book adaptations. In 2019, he had a recurring role as The Conductor in Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, which is based on the comic book series of the same name written by Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance. Other credits in Outerbridge’s name include Netflix’s short-lived series V-Wars, Amazon Prime’s science fiction drama The Expanse, The CW’s action thriller drama Nikita and movies such as Code 8, Saw VI, Mission to Mars and Cool Runnings.

Black Mask made his first appearance in Batman #386 in August 1985. The character has been portrayed by various voice actors over the years in television, video games and animated movies. Last year, Ewan McGregor portrayed the former business executive on the big screen in Birds of Prey.

In the most recent episode of Batwoman, viewers learned that Kate Kane had survived the plane crash, introducing a new altered Kate to be played by Wallis Day. Due to the injuries she sustained in the crash, Kate is unrecognizable and bandaged while being held hostage. Ryan, on the other hand, was closing in on death’s door due but ended up surviving. With Kate back, what could this mean for Ryan as Batwoman? The reasoning for the twist, according to showrunner Caroline Dries, is so Ryan can go through her own journey to find that confidence she has to be Batwoman and believe in herself.

With a name like Peter Outerbridge, Season 2 of Batwoman will undoubtedly get even better than it has been. In what capacity Black Mask will be part of the storyline is still unknown, but being a major comic book villain should point out that he will most likely make a big impact on Gotham and be a major player for Ryan and the Batwoman crew, as well as The Crows. However, it will be interesting to see exactly what that “revenge” Roman wants and what it has to do with masked vigilantes. In any case, we’re excited to see Outerbridge’s newest role and can’t wait to see what he brings to Gotham City!
