Doctor Who is getting a new assistant. It’s unlikely anyone in America will notice. Is the show even still on over here?

A revamped version of “Doctor Who” debuted in the US on the Sci-Fi channel earlier this year as a temporary replacement while the hit Sci-Fi show “Battlestar Galactica” went on break. If it’s still on, most people probably couldn’t tell you. It’s a miserable show, full of terrible, cookie-cutter plot clichés, bad acting, and even worse special effects. Of course the old versions of the show all had that too; I guess I was hoping that if they were bothering to update it they’d at least attempt to write a decent script or two to go along with it.

They haven’t.

Apparently the show’s a lot more popular in Great Britain though, since the BBC and other entertainment news outlets from across the pond are happily trumpeting the show’s change. Blonde actress Billie Piper, who had been playing the Doctor’s babe buddy is being replaced by a black actress named Freema Agyeman. 27-year-old Freema joins the show for its third season and will play a character named Martha Jones. Expect Piper’s character, Rose Tyler, to be killed off in the last episode of the current season.

The up side here is that the Doctor’s new helper can’t possibly be much worse than his last one, Tyler name or not.

If you’re a regular viewer of the show then you may have seen Freema before (Poor sap, go watch “Stargate” or something. At least they have a fanbase.). She played a minor character named Adeola in a previous episode.
